Bush Doctrine Stumper Leaves Sarah Palin Guessing
Not a good sign, no

Charlie Gibson's interview with Sarah Palin last night confirmed what many already feared: That for all the McCain-fueled vitriol towards the media for portraying her as some sort of dumb hockey mom, she doesn't know more than the Mighty Ducks when it comes to foreign policy. Palin did as expected: She dodged questions, filled her answers with vague postulating, and eventually forced Gibson to explain to her just what the hell he was talking about. Though big ups to Charlie for holding his own, and making sure viewers were aware that she didn't have a clue on what, say, the Bush Doctrine is, before he had to tell her about it. To be fair, George Bush would have probably been queasy on the question too.

Even Gibson looks bewildered in this clip, so it's just confusion all around. Perhaps Palin really did think she would spend two days with Gibson fielding softballs?

Sorry Palin, your vague answer is incorrect. Now please accept your consolation prize of being the one American blissfully ignorant of Bush's preemptive strike policy, and exit the public arena, stage right.

What interview were you watching? Palin easily manhandled bumbling Gibson with one hand tied behind her back. She answered every question clearly and with conviction. Buck up Jossip she's the REAL DEAL not like Obama who can't sit down and field the same questions.

GIBSON: But governor, I am asking you, do we have the right, in your mind, to go across the border, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?

PALIN: In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America, and our allies, we must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink, Charlie. In making those tough decisions of where we go, and even who we target.

Yeah, that's not very clear at all, is it Drew?

Look, if you don't want to vote for her I'm sure you'll find some lame excuse (like this post).

But for the first time we're looking at a woman with actual executive experience (not the Hillary kind where your husband gets blowjobs from his interns) in a position to potentially lead out nation. And she's got guts, poise & conviction.

Real feminists hate that, apparently. Cuz' ya know she believes in God, and all that yucky stuff.

She totally whiffed on the Bush Doctrine. Straight over the backboard. There wasn't even a flicker of recognition.

She would allow GEORGIA to join NATO even though that act ALONE would be seen by Russia as extremely hostile? That is insane. And then she would actually attack Russia if it got involved in another skirmish? She doesn't even seem to realize that Russia wasn't even the clear aggressor and that Georgia had been acting provocatively. Or that the situation is far more complex than a simple "Georgia vs. Russia" squabble.

McCain's attitude toward Russia is self-destructive and insane enough. But even he is not crazy enough to propose what Palin did.

According to wikipedia, Gibson didn't know what the Bush doctrine was either. Well, he knew 1/4 of it, but left out Military Primacy, New Multilateralism, and the Spread of Democracy.

But some Palin hater changed the WIKI entry this morning so that it is now more in agreement with Gibson's definition.

Most of America has never heard the term "Bush Doctrine" so nobody will care if Palin knew or she didn't know.

Actually, some real feminists do believe in God (some of us do shave our legs, wear lipstick–like hockey moms do!!, have nice racks, and pass on the "Fetus Cheerios" for breakfast), and we don't care that she believes in God. Personally if I ever (God forbid) get drugged and raped and impregnated, I'd like the government to, oh, I don't know, not dictate whether or not I have to carry a huge memory of that night with me for the rest of my life? That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

I don't care what she looks like, I don't really see how you can compare her "experience" to Hillary's (and if you're gonna bash her, at least make the joke somewhat funny–Bill getting BJs is kind of old and stale, innit?), but eh. People are so quick to assume that women don't like her because she's the prom queen. I think it's a bit more than that.

People who already liked Palin will still like her, and people who didn't won't. Any gaffes she made weren't big enough to change people's minds.

She terrifies me, though.

RONTFLMAO @ snoop. Executive experience? That broodmare hasn't even stepped a foot on the senate floor. She's a GOVERNOR of a state the size of a small town for the love of God. And she seemed extremely defensive in this interview. Wonder if she'll try to get Gibson fired now? Considering that's what she does every time she gets mad at someone.

"Executive experience? That broodmare hasn't even stepped a foot on the senate floor. She's a GOVERNOR of a state the size of a small town…"

Note to high school drop-out MW: Senators are not executives. Governors are executives, MW. And Sarah Palin, as such, holds the reins to the largest state in the Union with a multi-billion dollar budget and thousands of employees, anyone of whom she is absolutely empowered to dismiss at her executive discretion. Because, MW, she's a governor.

And she's hot, too. But I'm sure as a feminist you'll take more fake outrage at that than the fantasy-land accusations being leveled at her
just.
because.
she's.
a.
woman.

@snoop:

yeah, thank god she's got experience. with…um….wait, i know this!

the economy: the vast majority of the alaskan economy is propped up by federal subsidy. that's definitely going to prepare her for the harshest economic outlook the country's faced in over 50 years. she presided over a state without sales or income tax. she has never made anything even remotely resembling a difficult decision about how to allot money.

foreign policy: she applied for a passport for the first time LAST YEAR. i don't care how much f%^&ing national geographic she watches, or how close to russia she is. that's unacceptable in an era where interdependency and international cooperation are more important than ever.

the woman's shrewd, i'll give you that, but basically all she did was clean house. there was a play to be made, and she made it. she is driven by ambition, and nothing else. why else would anyone accept a job offer whose responsibilities are unclear to them?

While it seems true that Gov. Palin did not know what the Bush doctrine was, what is also clear is that Gibson (and an awful lot of internet bloggers) also have no idea what the Bush Doctrine is (and what International Law is).

As far as what International Law is, at least as far back as Hugo Grotius in “On the Rights of War and Peace” (1625), at Book 2, Chapter, 1, Section 5, pre-emptive war was justified if the threat was clear and imminent. That was exactly the position Palin advocated. If that’s all the Bush doctrine was, then the Bush Doctrine would be nothing new (pre-emptive strikes being used by other nations at least as far back as by Scotland in the Bishops’ Wars of 1639-1640 and in the last century by Israel in the Six Days War of 1967).
What was supposed to be new about the Bush doctrine is that the threat did NOT have to be imminent (Iraq may have been thought to be a threat to attack the U.S. down the road, but it was not a threat to attack the U.S. at the time of the invasion).

If anyone should be getting criticized, it's Charlie Gibson and those internet bloggers who were so unprepared and uninformed that in spite of being able to prepare in advance (Gibson) or after the fact (bloggers) they still can’t accurately explain what the Bush Doctrine is.

Ed Rae:
WHAT part of the Bush Doctrine is referenced? If ABC isn't too afraid RELEASE THE UNEDITED INTERVIEW! AT least then the left wing nuts could look at the truth of the interview but what do you expect from the left wing media? What a bunch of hatchet men Gibson leading the way!

Some experience. Don't forget that she *mismanaged* Wasilla to the extent that a recall vote was planned and then the town hired an *administrator* to come in and mind the store behind her. She banned no books, it's true, but she did try and then did try to have the librarian fired. And she is anti-choice — it's true that she made no moves to change the status quo re: reproductive rights, but given the opportunity, any smart cookie knows she would. Ah, Republicans… if McCain and Palin weren't so dangerous, you guys would be hilarious.

If McCain and Palin are dangerous then what the hell is Obama/Biden? Yeah we're REAL safe with those two at the controls… Obama will have to "thank" all his supporters for getting him elected (Sec. of State William Ayers, Sec. of the Interior Jesse Jackson, Sec. of Education Barney Frank). Now THAT'S scary!

Please read, then weep…..

Wikipedia's entry under the Bush Doctrine, which states:
The Bush Doctrine is a phrase used to describe various related foreign policy principles of United States President George W. Bush, enunciated in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The phrase initially described the policy that the United States had the right to treat countries that harbor or give aid to terrorist groups as terrorists themselves, which was used to justify the invasion of Afghanistan.[1]Later it came to include additional elements, including the controversial policy of preventive war, which held that the United States should depose foreign regimes that represented threat to the security of the United States, even if that threat was not immediate (used to justify the invasion of Iraq), a policy of supporting democracy around the world, especially in the Middle East, as a strategy for combating the spread of terrorism, and a willingness to pursue U.S. military interests in a unilateral way.[2][3][4] Some of these policies were codified in a National Security Council text entitled the National Security Strategy of the United States published on September 20, 2002.[5]

"…the woman's shrewd, i'll give you that, but basically all she did was clean house."

Maxameleon, can you imagine in your vacuous little mind making such an idiotic, derisive, sexist statement like that about Hillary Clinton?

Or any other accomplished female professional?

You so-called feminists have revealed you 'cause' for the lie it always was, and have lost any shred of credibility you ever might have had.

Now go bake me a turkey pot-pie, bitch.

Charlie Gibson jumped at the chance to define the 'Bush Doctrine' for everybody last night, including Governor Sarah Palin. The only problem is that he got it wrong. According to the journalist who coined the term and first defined the 'Bush Doctrine' Charlie Gibson does not know what he is talking about and blew it big time by passing on misinformation. See his article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....inionsbox1

Never let actual facts get in the way of a liberal elitist's agenda.

Idiot award of the week goes to: Chucky Gibson …….. my congrats!

She has no experience and she is more crooked than any politician in the race. Her personal ossues aside, she is just BLANK. She tried to use folksy talk and cute looks to throw Gibson off and he was clearly tired of her. She has been caught in lie after lie and her record is horrible, she's done everything McCain fought against and even thrown her family into the pot. Of course we as ordinary American shouldn;t know about politics but when running for VP she should have a clue. Even the questions she sorta answered were rehearsed and the same old thing. Even McCain couldn't defend her on the View, how sad is hat, he was backpeddling so fast he almost had a stroke. GO DEMS
