So, The Wire. It’s kind of a big deal. It’s HBO’s rebound show after The Sopranos. Also if you read that New Yorker profile of David Simon, the show’s creator, the guy comes off as kind of a genius.
The upcoming season of the show takes place at a paper that is a stand-in for The Baltimore Sun. Considering what the show did for Baltimore tourism, the Sun is probably not going to end up looking too good. Simon, who worked at the Sun, admitted to the L.A. Times, "Every now and then we take a potshot. I'd like to think they're deserved."
Well, that’s a nice thought. His former editor at the Sun, John S. Carroll, said, "He's the kind of guy whose ego needs to be fed by anger."
And former associate editorial page editor William Englund said, "David left here upset at the way people who were then editors treated him and has made no bones about it. … It's not going to be a love letter to the paper, that's for sure."
Tim Franklin, the paper’s current editor, doesn’t see the problem about having a talented writer with a vendetta portraying his paper. “I don't know that this is going to depict a real-life newsroom any more than Grey's Anatomy depicts a real hospital in Seattle,” he told the L.A. Times.
Hey, if Franklin thinks Grey’s Anatomy is a fair comparison to The Wire, then maybe he deserves whatever this season has in store for him.
