TheFaceBook will host National Beirut Championship

» More Internet

TheFaceBook.com – the Friendster for frats, if you’re unacquainted – already has 500 teams signed up for its first ever National Beirut Championship, coming in February. For only $10 you can compete against teams at your college for a chance at nationals, where a $10,000 prize will be awarded to the winner. Be sure to read up on the details, because this is Beirut, not beer pong.

Should you have the poor fortune to be under 21 or go to a school with a dry campus, you will have to play with 2% milk – though we recommend letting it curdle so your vision will blur like the real players. And yes, college drinking games have come to this.

Since you’ll actually have to be a member of TheFaceBook to read the details, we’ve provided them below the jump.

Thefacebook is bringing you a National Beirut Championship this February. If you want to meet people from your school, compete for a spot at the nationals and get a chance to win the $10,000 grand prize, then you’re at the right place.

First you’ll compete against your classmates to determine the best team at your school, and then all the top teams will be invited out to New York for a weekend of intense beirut at the national championship tournament. When the dust clears, one team will be declared National Beirut Champions.

Before you sign up for the tournament, you’ll need to find a partner from your school to play with. There is a registration fee for your college tournament of $10 per team (why?).

For more information, check out the National Beirut Championship Rules and FAQ.

Oh, you want the FAQ?

What is beirut?

Beirut, sometimes known as beer pong, is a game that college kids play by throwing ping pong balls into cups of beer (or sometimes milk see below). If you don’t know what we’re talking about, leave now.

So why a National Beirut Championship?

Why the hell not? It’s awesome, and we want to give college kids another reason to cut loose and meet other college kids. Plus having a weekend of beirut, beer and general good times in New York, giving away a $10,000 prize and crowning a national beirut champion will be pretty sweet too.

Why is there a $10 registration fee?

Well, if we were smart, we’d probably plan ahead, make sponsorship deals, sell ads and get someone in New York to host the nationals for us. But then there would be no national beirut championship until 2007, and that sucks. So instead, we’re working with our friends and charging just enough money to hold these tournaments now assuming none of that other stuff comes through in the next month. Actually, we’re all probably going to lose about $10,000 unless someone offers us a bunch of free kegs. But it’s cool — we could either be using that money to fight a lawsuit or hold a National Beirut Championship. I think we made the right decision.

How do these tournaments work?

The national beirut championship is broken down into two stages of tournaments: the college tournaments and the national tournament. When you register for the national beirut championship, your team will be entered into your college’s tournament, where you will compete with other teams from your college to decide which team your school is going to send to the nationals. This team will receive a $500 prize (which should cover the cost of getting to and from nationals) and will get to come to the three day national championship in New York, where they will compete against the winners from every other school for the beirut crown and $10,000 prize.

Specifics about the college tournaments

On February 2nd, when we close registration, we’ll generate a tournament bracket for each school. This bracket will determine which teams will play which in each round of the competition. The tournament is best-two-of-three single-elimination, which basically means that you play until one team has won two games of beirut. If you lose then you’re done, if you win then you advance to the next round until there’s only one team left. In each round that your team is still in the tournament, thefacebook will tell you who you’re playing, but it’s up to you to get in touch with the other team to figure out a time and place to play before the round ends. Once you’ve played, it’s up to you to report to thefacebook who won the game. All beirut should be played using facebook house rules, which you can read here.

Specifics about the national tournament

On February 26th*, all of the college champions will come to New York to compete in the three day beirut finals. On day one, teams will play in a round robin. The results from this round robin will be used to seed teams for the single elimination tournament we’ll run on days two and three. At the end of day three, we’ll have a National Beirut Champion and a $10,000** winner.

Do I have to be 21?

If you’re under 21 you’re welcome to register and play in your college’s tournament, but you’re going to have to drink 2% milk, which is probably harder to take down than beer. The finals in New York, however, will be conducted with beer only, so only those who are 21 or older will be able to compete at the nationals. If you are under 21 and you win your college’s tournament, you will still receive a $500 prize and bragging rights as your school’s beirut champion, but you won’t be able to compete in New York unless you turn 21 before the nationals.

My campus is dry. Can I still play?

Yes, you can play with 2% milk on your campus. If your school is dry or has any other rules against beirut, don’t break the rules for the tournament. Seriously, we don’t want anyone to get in trouble. So play with milk in your college tournament, and then if you win you can play with beer in New York.

Will I ever have to play more than one round in a day?

Not for the college tournaments. We don’t want people to over-drink — it’s not healthy. So in the college round everyone is prohibited from playing more than one round of the tournament in a day. Be careful in general!

Facebook house rules

We play ten cups and three cans (beer for 21+, 2% milk for 20-). Re-rack on six, three and one. if you hit a cup off a bounce, the other team drinks two cups. If both teammates hit cups, they shoot again. If both teammates hit the last cup, the game’s over. If both teams hit each other’s last cups, they play overtime rounds with three cups and one can. When playing in your college’s tournament, a winner should be decided by winning best two of three games. Any rules can be altered as long as both teams are in agreement. For all unspecified rules, play within reason.

When the game is done, both teams should report the winner on thefacebook. Beirut is a game of honor: don’t lie about the result of a game. Whatever it takes, both sides must come to a consensus on who won the game or neither team will advance to the next round. If only one team reports a winner, that winner will used. For the college tournaments, if no one reports a winner or the game hasn’t been played by the time the round is over (you’ll have a few days to play), then neither team will advance to the next round. Beirut games in the nationals will be overseen by officials.

How do I register for the tournament?

Go here.

Emphasis ours, but it probably wasn’t necessary.
