David Richard Garvin is no Peter Braunstein, but the 42-year-old gunman who was shot dead after killing two auxiliary (read: volunteer) cops and an employee at a pizzeria in Greenwich Village this week does have a media tale to tell.
He held down a 5-year tenure at the Wall Street Journal, where from 2000-2005 he was an an information graphics coordinator — and was fired after making threats about harming people who were "out to get him." That's in addition to at least a pair of other media gigs at two smaller papers in Arizona and Missouri. His work at the Journal even snagged him a Pulitzer Prize, or at least a certificate saying he worked at the paper when it won for its 9/11 coverage. He also had an interest in filmmaking, of the dark comedy variety.
Officials retrieved a resume of Garvin's during a search of his home, which listed him as a "newspaper reporter, stringer and layout editor" at the Journal. Which means there's ample opportunity to make the "he went from designing headlines to being one" joke.
But we're above that.
