Don't Hate The Player, Hate The Snickers Commercial Where Two Homophobic Dudes Totally Freak Out

First Isaiah Washington gets labeled a hate-monger for calling some dude a "fag" and then lying about it, so to appease his public, Washington checks himself into a rehab center to treat his "anti-gayness" gene.

Then last week, Paris Hilton offends everyone (and surprises/disappoints approximately no one) when it turns out that she hates black people and "little jappy jews" almost as much as we all hate her.

And now, Snickers is in trouble for that hate-mongering commercial that aired during the Super Bowl.

You know, that one where two mechanics share a Snickers bar ("Lady and the Tramp" style), and are so horrified by the ensuing almost-kiss that they start pulling out fistfuls of chest hair in a deluded attempt to prove their manliness?

Yeah, that one.

Anyways, suddenly, GLADD is chastising Snickers, Mars and the NFL for endorsing prejudice, the Colts and Bears spokesmen (who were contacted why, exactly?) are mumbling incoherent outdated phrases like "we are aware of the brouhaha" and "no comment," and the NFL is implausibly claiming they were "too focused on the Big Game" to pre-screen any of the offensive ad campaigns.

Meanwhile the Super Bowl ad controversy doesn't end there, as viewers (apparently unfamiliar with television and the whole "suspended reality" concept) are still reeling from a GM spot in which a depressed robot (i.e. you, the viewer!) momentarily daydreams about jumping off a bridge.

Could it be that the New York Times was right all along when they argued that the cartoonish violence of the Super Bowl commercials was likely a reflection of the toll of the United States' war in Iraq?

We think not. So we've decided to weigh in and say, once and for all, what we think is—and isn't—offensive.

Issue: Isaiah Washington calls T.R. Knight a fag on the set of Grey's Anatomy
Verdict: Mildly offensive, at least until we got too sick of the whole thing to care anymore.

Issue: Paris Hilton caught on videotape hurling racial epithets
Verdict: Medium-grade offensive. (Would be even more so if we'd had an inkling of respect for her to begin with, but regardless, we now think even less of her than we did after we found out she gave Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis the "best head of his life.")

Issue: A commercial in which two straight men freak out about accidentally almost kissing each other
Verdict: Borderline offensive? We watched the Super Bowl in a room full of bitchy queens and not one of them was at all bothered by this possibly homophobic, definitely "not funny" ad.

Issue: A fictional robot contemplates ending his fictional (artificial intelligence) life by jumping off a fictional bridge.
Verdict: If you're offended by this, please stand up slowly, and walk away from the computer.

    The snickers commercial? Eh…stupid easily forgotten. What makes it offensive is that Mars inc. decided to make a big deal about it, offering alternate endings, and showing players reactions to the commerical. That's why people took offensive. Otherwise it should be a nonissue.

    I watched that commercial in a room full of beer-guzzling alpha males… no one laughed. I agree, borderline offensive but mostly just stupid. (Wait, did I just offend stupid people with that comment? Off to rehab I go…)

    Frankly, despite her best efforts, there's nothing Paris Hilton can do that's more essentilally offensive than breathing the air meant for real people.

    As for the Snicker's commercial: kind of funny, not offensive at all. Except maybe to white trash, who were the ACTUAL PUNCHLINE TO THE JOKE, GLAAD…why doesn't the oft-maligned white trash community have a NAAWT?
