Dr. Jan Adams Is Tired Of Being Known As 'The Guy Who Killed Kanye West's Mom'
Did you know that the doctor who performed cosmetic surgery on Donda West nearly had his medical license revoked by the California Medical Board after sustaining multiple DUI's? Did you know he wasn't even certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
TMZ did! And odds are, so did Donda West.
Not surprisingly, the surgeon (who, as we now know, is no stranger to brushes with the law) is denying any/all wrongdoing. [Stereohyped]

It's a tragedy that Donda died like this. However, remember she was a VERY intelligent lady. However, the first surgeon Donda checked out declined to do the multiple operations (breast reduction/tummy tuck) due to his fear that she might die of a heart attack. He referred her to another internist, whom she NEVER bothered to see.
Just like Kanye — Donda was very stubborn it seems. She decided to go AGAINST her other doctor's advice — and THIS is what happened. Again, I feel bad that Donda's gone. She was a very amazing woman. But, people need to realize that being ALIVE is definitely better than being and THIN.
… I meant to say it's better to be ALIVE and chubby, than thin and DEAD.
I agree with Maldoror.
I'm withholding my judgment of this man until AFTER the autopsy report is revealed. It is EXTREMELY common for a doctor to have malpractice suits lodged against him/her. That's why doctors pay so much for insurance, because it's nearly guaranteed that at some point in their career, they will get sued. So, I don't make the automatic conclusion that because he has a few cases against him, that this means he killed Donda West.
It's tragic that she didn't listen to the advice of the other surgeon, but blame games will not bring her back. Sad to think that she died for vanity.
I wouldn't want to be in his shoes… or mine either for that matter
This guy has his own Plastic Surgery show on the Discovery Health Channel. I think it's is called Sugery:Before and After. So he has a show and he's not even certified? That's crazy. I too need to get more details before I settle on a viwpoint on this issue. I do know that however she passed, her being gone is a tragedy and is very saddening.
Death From Cosmetic Surgery Is Never Acceptable
Olivia Goldsmith, author of 'The First Wives' Club,' died having cosmetic surgery. Recently, Donde West died following cosmetic surgery. These, as well as virtually every reported death from cosmetic surgery, were probably avoidable.
With a 446% increase in cosmetic procedures since 1997, Friedberg's Anesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery from Cambridge University Press is a timely arrival.
Although the book is primarily designed for the profession, the public needs an awareness of a safer alternative to commonly employed anesthesia for cosmetic surgery. Much like the days before fathers were permitted to observe the birth of their children, the public needs to be empowered to ask for safer anesthesia!
On August 1, 2001, http://www.drfriedberg.com was launched as a non-commercial patient oriented web site to empower patients to know there were anesthesia options and to ask for them! Anesthesia in Cosmetic Surgery is the next step in this empowerment.
All cosmetic surgery takes place on the superficial layers ('the wrapper') of the body.
As such, all cosmetic surgery must be considered minimally invasive, despite the length of the surgery or the extent of the dissection.
Minimally invasive anesthesia (MIA)® is only logical for minimally invasive surgery. Growing numbers of anesthesiologists are beginning to share this view but more need to be asked to provide it for cosmetic surgery. Only the general public can provide this force for change.
Fundamental to the administration of MIA is the use of a level of consciousness monitor like the bispectral index (BIS). Approved for this use in 1996 by the FDA, universal use of BIS has not yet occurred.
Prior to BIS monitoring, anesthesiologists were obliged to guess at the correct dosage and, for fear of under-medicating, routinely overmedicated by a factor of at least 20-30%. Anesthesia was the art of the 'controlled overdose.' The advent of BIS monitoring has made that style of practice unnecessary and potentially dangerous.
BIS provides a number between 0-100 derived from information obtained from the sensor on the patient's forehead. The lower the number, the deeper the level of consciousness, sleep or 'hypnosis,' as it is known in the anesthesia profession.
General anesthesia sleep levels occur between 45-60. The patient doesn't hear, feel, or remember their surgery with general anesthesia. The same experience can be had with intravenous propofol at BIS between 60-75, a level Dr. Friedberg has trademarked as an integral part of MIA.
BIS levels below 45 are considered overmedicating ('controlled overdose') and suboptimal for long-term safety. The brain is the target organ for the anesthesiologists' medications. This information is not obtainable with any current vital signs monitors. No elective cosmetic surgery patient should have anesthesia without a BIS or similar level of consciousness monitor. Therefore, Dr. Friedberg deems the BIS a standard of care.
Cosmetic surgery patients continue to needlessly suffer postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and unnecessary pain after many surgical procedures including cosmetic surgery. Most cosmetic surgery patients receive local anesthesia injection after receiving general anesthesia. This process fails to predictably produce 'pre-emptive analgesia' or substantial postoperative pain relief. General anesthesia does not block all of the pain signals from the local injection from reaching the brain. MIA does block all painful signals thereby reproducibly provides preemptive analgesia without the use of agents that cause PONV. MIA also preserves leg muscle tone, avoiding phlebitis along with lethal pulmonary embolism.
General anesthesia for cosmetic surgery is unnecessary and an excessive, sometimes fatal, trespass upon the patient.
Disclaimer: Dr. Friedberg is not employed by Aspect Medical Systems, makers of the BIS monitor. He is not a stockholder or a paid consultant. The opinions expressed herein are his professional opinion based on 10 years experience with BIS monitoring.
Of Course it is easier to blame Dr. Adams who has a checked past, but please hold all judgment until after the autopsy is revealed. Donda will be missed terribly but it was her decision to undergo surgery knowing her health was not good. Donda was an educated and intelligent woman and she knew the odds.On 9/11/01 I to had breast reduction and a family history of heart problems, but I did the surgery for health reason as well as beauty. Sometimes intelligent women makes unintelligent decision when a drunken doctor has his opinion. My prayers are with Kanye and family.
This is an eye opening!!!
Dr. Jan Adams is plastered all over multiple shows and different networks, and now everyone is pulling him. He's not a certified plastic surgeon and probably thought doing her risky surgery was going to catapult him to even more fame. Kanye West is extremely wealthy his mom was a college professor, also not poor. There was no reason she couldnt have gotten a better surgeon, who would have taken the proper precausions. It sucks that the doctor took the chance but it was still her choice, he should have been a good doctor and not have made the choice to do the surgery.
As for TMZ, I think its important to know that many of the surgeons that are on television claiming to be experts aren't certified. Its not like Adams was mentioned somewhere, he has his own show on Discovery Health, and has been on many different talk shows. It should be known that someone who is being revered as a credible doctor almost had his medicaal licensed revoked because he's too busy drinking. If he's stupid enough to drive drunk he might be operating drunk too. I say kudos to TMZ for exposing things like this, its more important than following Britney and Paris around.
Ms. West's death was tragic, no matter what the cause. However, I don't see where Dr. Jan Adams' career is being destroyed as a result. Her passing resulted in his background being looked into. What has been discovered has been the truth!
If you check on the web, Dr. Adams' bio states that he is a "ground breaking" doctor. He has appeared on numerous television shows and has been portrayed as a 'God' in the field of plastic surgery. If you check with the California Medical Board, it shows 1 complaint and 1 malpractice suit. (Gee, hasn't every doctor had at least one; especially a plastic surgeon)?
The DUI's are a matter of TRUTH! Public records turned up THIRTEEN malpractice suits. Many of these actual documents are available online. The suits that have been won against him haven't even been paid; (probably) because the man has no malpractice insurance. Other court papers show him as a drunk, a controller and an abuser. These are legal documents folks, so don't tell me that he's innocent until proven guilty! He's already been found guilty in many instances. The public merely wasn't aware!
My daughter was one of his 'victims', and I begged her not to have surgery (by anyone). I did my own 'checking' and everything I found (at the time) made him out to be (as aforementioned) a GOD! I 'thought' she was in capable hands. What followed was nothing less than a nightmare, and it's one that you don't wake up from. While she developed blood clots, internal bleeding and 'blisters' on her skins surface, he kept telling her, "I'll fix it." She was bedridden for weeks, and I can't even begin to describe the pain. Instead of 'fixing' her, he deformed her even worse. She now has to have a minimum of THREE surgeries to repair the mutilation. Oh, and how he said that "problems don't occur immediately. Her problems began within hours of the surgery!
In April 2007, documents were filed to suspend or revoke Dr. Adams' medical license in view of his history of DUI's, with the last one being March 31, 2006. WHY did it take the medical board more than year to file these papers? And, how much anguish could have been spared, had they filed them promptly?
My heart goes out to the West family. No amount of scrutiny towards Dr. Adams will ever bring her back. What it will do, however, is expose the truth which, in turn, may save others.
It is very sad that Kanye's mother died so young and in such a way. I do feel very sorry for him, for now, he has to go it alone. A great, big loss.
As for the doctor, we can wish if he is found responsible for Mrs. West's death, that it will end his career. It appears he's done a lot of damage to a lot of people and has a gripping addiction.
Any surgery is frightening enough without having added worries of a drunken and uncaring surgeon.
as a nurse I know that if she went to another MD first he refussed to do the surgery because the risk was to high. She then went doctor shoping untill she found one that would do it. That does
not make it her fault. All Pt's must have medical clearence before surgery if he did surgery on her knowing she was not cleared the fault is his alone. He is the MD with the medical knowlage.
LOTS of surgeons and doctors NEVER become board certified. I know, because I run a locum tenens and physician perm recruitment firm in Dallas. The fact that he wasn't boarded isn't the issue or really a big deal. What a patient NEEDS to look at is how many similar cases the doc has done, the results of said cases, and verify and check references and state licensure. You can do all of this through the docs office and online.
Jack is exactly right. Just because a physician isn't board certified does not meant that he/she is incapable or imcompetant. It just means that they have chosen not to sit for the board certification of whatever board certifies their discipline. Unfortunately, too many people do not do their homework on whatever physician they are contemplating to employ to perform a procedure on them. Just because Dr. Adams has a DUI on his record does not mean that he is a bad surgeon. It means he made some poor personal choices. That being said, the medical examiner's report will either clear or condemn whatever Dr. Adams did or did not do. Hopefully, Mrs. West's tragic death will serve good as a lesson for us all to be very careful who we choose to perform elective surgery on us.
What we need is a national system that keeps standard data on the training, certification, competence and outcomes for every physician. In this case, both doctor and patient share the blame, but only one of them is dead.
what is needed is for the society to be thinking more natural body acceptance than wanting to look like someone else as we all know those who love plastic surgery and now are mutilated by the skin saying enough is enough. it is about the mindset of people. we do not know our skin tecture and how it reacts to surgical incisions and then we go against our health status come on. how many of us go against our better health judgement and then suffer our own consequences and blame others.
Its a very sad thing that happened to Mrs. West, however i feel that both parties are paying for poor choices. She was not trying to CUT corners on cost so i wish people would be more realistic the woman was RICH.She found a doc that would do it given the HIGH risk. Im sure she may have known he was not certified, however certification does not mean you are a good doctor and it dosent mean that you are not. She chose him b/c he agreed to do it knowing she was at high risk given her health condition. Prior to this incident he was on Oprah and that says a lot in itself and he also had his own TV show which gives the facade that he was a good doctor. WE ALL take risks and it is just so sad to say that this one ended up in Tragedy. So stop pointing fingers cause it is both parties involved fault, and their families are the ones left to suffer. God bless Kanye and his family durring this time of need.
I also want people to remember that this was a highly educated woman. She took a chance, she knew there was a possibility things could end up bad, she is human and took that chance. It is sad it cost her life. Sit back and ask yourself how many of us take risks that could ultimately end our life in some sort of way? We all do regardless if we want to admit it or not.
But back to Dr. Jan Adams. He is a doctor and he has had cases before which ruined patients lives. He should have not performed that surgery. He knew she was at High risk and he knew better than she did her chance of surviing. He didnt care. He will pay for this greedy mistake he made and she has paid with her life. it is such a sad thing!
I want to go on the record as someone who has had plastic surgery with Dr. Adams, and has been very pleased with the results. I think it's a shame the way his reputation is being mutilated as a result of greed, stupidity, and racism. He clearly has some personal issues that he needs to work on, who doesn't, but that does not mean he is a negligent surgeon as the media would like you to believe, or those choosing to sue him for monitary purposes.

Jan Adams, like Richard Ellenbogen - is a greedy, fame and money hungry sociopath.
Like Adams, Richard Ellenbbogen has left many people mutilated and deformed, yet he is still on TV all the time.
Ellenbogen removed the nasal spine and almost all of the soft tissue and cartilage in my tip thereby leaving me with a very short, deformed looking nose.
http://www.geocities.com/cosme.....riumi.html He’s done this to many — when i was at my reconstructive surgeon’s office in chicago, dr. t — i met several others who had been harmed by him.
Ellenbogen, like Adams, pays for lots of publicity and advertisement b/c he can’t seem to get patients through word of mouth. I went to him for a very minor change, and came out looking unrecognizeable.
Why does California protect drug addicts and alcoholics who are “doctors”?
It's just a disgrace how there is no oversight in our medical system.
