Either Joaquin Phoenix is Punking Us, Or He Really Quit Acting

Okay, I used to be obsessed with Joaquin Phoenix. This was pre-Johnny Cash, pre-Signs, and pre-Ladder 49. This was around the time when he starred in Quills and played the emperor in Gladiator. There was something so hotly fey about him, and he seemed so tortured. There was even this one interview for Details where he likened himself to a shaved hamster. Plus, knowing how he grew up, and what happened to his brother, and all that weird Children of God cult stuff his family was into, Joaquin seemed like the perfect troubled young man with a harelip to star in my adolescent fantasies.

And this story about how Joaquin announced he was quitting acting sort of makes me love him even more, even though it makes no sense:

Probed further by "Extra's" Jerry Penacoli, "Are you serious?" Phoenix, who was curiously being followed by his own camera crews, reiterated, "Yeah. I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."

Penacoli, still suspicious, followed up with Casey Affleck who was standing next to Phoenix. Penacoli asked, "I take it that he's kidding?" Affleck responded, "I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff."

Today, "Extra" contacted Phoenix's rep for clarification and got this response: "That is what he told me."

Either Joaquin is getting his own reality show, or this is fer real. Either way, can I make a band suggestion name? "The Shaved Hamsters." Nice ring to it, I think.

This makes me sad.

I didn't fall in line with Joaquin right away, I was a fan of River's and took his passing really hard. Being a fan of his brother's seemed like a betrayal - till I realized just a few years ago what a different personality and style he had.

I hope he's getting a reality show. I'd hate for him to be done acting just when I'm starting to like him after all, I'm even more of a snob about my music than I am about my movies.

Hard to believe but true ^_^;

I HIGHLY doubt he will be in a reality show. He's like, really private and somewhat xenophobic.

Is he GAY? You never see him with any girls. He is always with an entourage of men. Someone must know something. Is he the new Rock Hudson of Hollywood?

He's not gay. he's had a ton of girlfriends (liv tyler for one) he just doesnt publicise his private life. dunno what to make of this to be honest. I do know his brother was a musician, a very good one in fact. he had his own band and did a few bits with john frusciante and flea from red hot chili peppers. i read that when he died he was planning to retire from movies and become a musician full time. Joaquin announced his plans a couple of days ago- River died 15 years ago tomorrow. living his brothers dream for him??

If you haven't seen the interview you can find it on the web. In the interview joaquin indicates that it is Casey's time now (Casey is married to hi sister and the brother of Ben Affleck). Perhaps he is leaving so Casey can take the spotlight? Perhaps he's leaving b/c he needs a break? Perfect excuse to bow out for a short time. I will miss his new releases…THAT'S FOR SURE…and he can always "come back" and say….did I say that? :) I hope he does in the near future…I was really counting on the new releases…I really think he is an exceptional actor and person. My prediction…he's not done acting yet. He want to leave more to the imagination.
