Emily Rooney Owns "Beat The Press" So Get Your Sticky Fingers Off This Easily Formed Play on Words

Who owns the name "Beat The Press?" MSNBC's Dan Abrams just got done delivering a wallop to CNN for ripping off the media mocking segment from his show Verdict. But his segment title, which was borrowed from Tucker Carlson's canceled show – which, from what we can tell, came after Huffington Post launched "Eat the Press," which itself was a riff on Tim Russert's excellent Meet the Pressmight be a rip-off itself (via). Boston's public television host Emily Rooney says she has the rights to the title.

And, in fact, she does. Since 1993, the WGBH host (and daughter of 60 Minutes' Andy Rooney) has owned the copyright to "Beat the Press," and uses the title for her own show. "I think this is intellectual thievery," she says.

Funny, 'cause when Abrams called out CNN's copying, he claimed it was "pure intellectual thievery."

Who's stealing intellect now?!

Emily Rooney has an incredibly good and intellectually satisfying show on WGBH (PBS on Channel 2) in Boston. Too bad it isn't out there nationally.

re: the use of the phrase "intellectual thievery" - apparently you don't pick up on tongue in cheek very well - do you? Of COURSE she knew that Dan Abrams used that phrase…

I am outraged that Ms. Rooney calls a candidate for VP not allowing interviews and critical questions about her background "brilliant strategy"

Ms. Rooney, that is UnAmerican and is something that Joe Goebells would applaud you on. You along with the rest of the so-called mainstream media should be angered by this gutless, stealth and UNAMERICAN strategy of hiding a potential VP of the Unmited States from the voters.

I have lost a great deal of respect for you.

    DearEmily Rooney,
A few weeks ago we sent you a copy of a major new book published this year. It is called Turning Learning Right Side Up, by Russell L. Ackoff and Daniel Greenberg, both extremely learned and versatile men. At this particular moment, as we are questioning economic and political institutions, it seems to make just as much sense to question educational institutions. This book does. This is not just another book about reforming education. It is a book about completely changing a system that is no longer serving its purpose and no longer serving the public.

Both of the authors are easy and amusing to interview and would make a great story in this moment when we are looking at all of our established institutions and wondering what is best for the future.

If you have further questions, or to schedule an interview, please let me know, either by email or by phone (508-877-3030).
