Enjoy Your Late Night TV Now, It’ll Be Gone Soon
Writers Strike Is Set In Motion

The Writers Guild of America is set to strike, maybe as early as Monday. The WGA negotiation board made a unanimous recommendation to stop writing in response to failed contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

The fight was over residuals on DVD residuals; currently writers receive less than a nickel for each disc sold, and want to double that rate for any DVD with more than $1 million in wholesale revenue.

The producers claim that DVD revenue is critical to break even on projects that are increasingly expensive. Also, producers like to make as much money as possible.

Back channel communication will be taking place over the weekend, but there’s only a small chance that this will lead to a resolution before a walk out.

Networks have scripts for sitcoms and dramas at least until the New Year, and there's always reality TV, which isn't scripted so much as well-produced. But the writing demands of late night shows will make them affected first.

So enjoy Conan tonight. He might not be there on Monday.
