Every $1 Million in Olympics Advertising NBC Sells, It Receives $2 Million in Free Publicity

NBC has sold more than $1 billion in Olympic advertising! And ya know what? Your Aunt Sally is as likely to know that fact as she is about Michael Phelps winning enough gold at this year's games to put a down payment on a house. That's because NBC is doing an excellent job at alerting the press everytime a new nickel comes through its coffers. The past 24 hours were filled with news items like this one, about NBC's latest Olympics advertising coup: Selling an additional $10 million in ads. It's semi-notable, because NBC is now selling the ad time it had reserved for any make-goods (where, if an advertiser doesn't get the viewership numbers it was guaranteed, NBC gives 'em free advertising to hit the target). But with ratings looking like Alan Cumming on a coke bender — that is, sky high — there's no reason to keep that ad time around without monetizing it. And the B2B press, especially, is eating up the storyline, because everywhere else is bad news. [Photo]
