Feeling Like Shit?

Last night we had one of those overly symbolic dreams. We won’t go into details out of respect for our subconscious, but it was about as obvious as your mom is choking you in a dream. We picked that example randomly; our mom has never choked us symbolically or otherwise.

But then we read this article in the New York Times about a Hasidic Jewish principal who has transformed a mostly black and Hispanic middle school in the Bronx. And even though our dream had nothing to do with the public policy in New York City, our hearts warmed.

The principal’s changes to the school are somewhat controversial, but seem to be working. The fact that he’s Hasidic and his students have probably never been to a Bar Mitvah adds that “only in New York” element that New Yorkers can use to justify their exorbitant rent.

Some parents’ initial reaction to his religion was kind of funny. One mother told the Times, “Wow, we’re going to have a Jewish person, what’s going to happen? Are the kids going to have to pay for lunch?”

Get it? Because Jews are known for being cheap. Only in New York could such mild anti-Semitism be funny. A $2000 a month hole in the wall is totally worth it!
