Fox News Courts Coveted "Old n' Grouchy" Demographic
Appeal to young viewers by offering them hard candy

No wonder Fox News spends its days sounding like your racist grandpop: he's the network's target audience. Fox's median age is 63.9, according to Nielsen. Hysterically, that must have been the demographic that Greta Van Susteren was gloating about in her blog yesterday.

But now that it looks like young people might be voting in huge numbers this year, you would think Fox News would cater some programming toward a younger demo to get those delicious, advertiser-friendly viewers during the election coverage. You would be wrong.

Too bad Tim Russert had to die at one of Fox's competitors; it left a perfect son-sized hole in programming to be filled with Luke Russert, correspondent to the youth generation.

Now Fox has to do take a different tactic — covering the youth vote as its own voter demo, but supposedly not caring about the youth vote when its own viewership is concerned — and be all bitter grapes about the whole scenario:

[Heather Nauert, a Fox News Channel correspondent] said they had not sensed a correlation between Fox’s coverage of the youth vote and its desire to attract a younger audience. Even if there is a connection, it may not matter. Ms. Nauert said she had met a significant number of twenty-somethings who do not own TV sets.

“That fact really surprised me,” she said.

Yeah! Screw the kiddies, Fox! You didn't want their stupid viewership anyway. It would get in the way of all those blood pressure and E.D. advertisers.

Now, take your Accupril and lie down for a nap; getting worked up like this is liable to throw your hip out again.

- and yet Fox News ROUTINELY beats MSDNC and CNN in the all important 25-54 "demo".
