FreeCreditReport.com's Lying Marketing Has Gone Viral

Know what's proven to be an excellent way to market stuff? Sex! Also? The word "free." Usually when you see advertisements featuring either of these two things, you will not get a single one. Such is the case with FreeCreditReport.com, which isn't so much a place to download your financial history from one of three credit bureaus, but a chance to sign up for a paid monthly "credit monitoring" service. This credit monitoring service will not, however, alert you to the fact that you actually started paying a monthly fee for this convenience. And guess what? Experian, the credit bureau that owns the website, didn't accidentally insert the word "free" into its web address! It's supposed to be there to trick the gullible into thinking a company responsible for holding your credit history hostage actually wants to give you anything gratis. And it's working!

Thanks to nearly $71 million in ad spending last year, FreeCreditReport.com clocked 20 percent more new member sign-ups that year. Maybe it has something to do with its "catchy" TV ads that feature some loser waiting tables because he's in financial ruin (for not checking his credit report!) and singing, "F-R-E-E, that spells free creditreport.com, baby. Saw their ads on my TV, thought about going but was too lazy."

And maybe it has to do with the company basically lying to consumers, promising a free credit report but hooking them into a paid service. The Federal Trade Commission certainly thinks there's something devious going on here, though Experian would beg to differ.

As for consumers — for every one that feels tricked into signing up for a paid service, there are probably 2,000 who have watched FreeCreditReport.com's ads on YouTube (they've been seen three million times) and perhaps uploaded their own spoofs.

Those ads are SO annoying. The lead guy is from Canada, doesn't really speak English, and every time he lip synchs, (especially the one where they're in a crappy car driving around ), it NEVER matches up to the words! It honestly drives me nuts and makes me want to never patronize this service–even if I *didn't* have doubts about it being free to begin with!!

After ordering the service you have 30 days to cancel before they start charging your credit card. Its a hassle to cancel as they then try to offer you more stuff, but keep saying no and it will be all good, plus you got your credit report already.. so if you do it that way it really is free.

Probably 9.9 out of 10 people (yes, 9.9) completely, 100 percent hate those annoying, stupid, amateurish ads, which are some of the worst ads to muddle up television in, oh, weeks. People just cannot craft good, solid, entertaining ads any more on a regular basis. Not that advertising has ever been that good–most radio, television and print ads are just terrible anyway. But these are just awful–stupid awful.

They can get away with it because they legally ARE providing a link to free credit reports…just as a tiny, tiny gray link at the bottom of the page (under the matching advertisment graphics). So, if you don't read…you pay.

If I could, I would pay a hitman to shut up that little prick in those ads that keep coming more and more often on AOL radio and Yahoo radio. Why can't they choose sponsors with decent ads ? Remember on City Sklickers, Billy Cristal almost loses his job for allowing some stupid and annoying ads on air and losing audience ? Why don't they do the same on those radios ? Who chooses the ads that go on air anyway? That person should get sacked.
