Aquaman's $116m Box Office Draw Was Fake, But CNBC's Reporting It Wasn't
— Wed, Jul 12, 2006 —

Oh, so you saw that two-page ad in Variety too, the one where HBO's pretty brilliant marketing team ran a fake ad touting the returns on Aquaman — the blockbuster at the center of Entourage's plotline. It got a lot of people talking, exactly what HBO was aiming for. But CNBC's Joe Kernan also got to talking. Except he didn't know the ad was fake. He didn't know the movie was fake. Though the absence of irony as he delivers the weekend box office draw? That's the only thing that's not fake.

I actually was watching when he said that but I assumed he was just a fan of the show and dropped the newscasters version of the inside joke. Any reason we think he thought it was a real movie. I knew nothing of the ad.

Hate to burst your bubble but he knew. Joe Kernan and that crew are constantly discussing Entourage and making jokes about it. They have been doing it since Entourage started.

You did not burst my bubble. I have talked with Joe, and we have discussed Entourage. TVNewster is being interviewed this morning on Squak Box. Hopefully they will mention my blog.

Jason, you're either an idiot for thinking he seriously thought Aquaman was a real movie, or for duplicing the idiocy of O'Reilly who made the same comments on his show.

So lets recap;

You though this guy was an idiot for rushing to the public with something he thought was a fact before he had done any homework or background checking. So you, in turn, decided to make fun of him by posting it on your website without ever having seen SquakBox. You later find out that not only does he know about it but it is a common joke on the show and it is not he that is the idiot who rushed to judgement but it was you, and you, are in fact the idiot. about right?

Little advice; There will NEVER be a time when a clown like you will have more knowledge of any situation then a guy like Joe Kernan. In the futute just assume he knows more than you before you try to make a fool of the guy on you stupid Fuckin site. Just my 2 cent.

BTW, you keep saying you talked to him like that absolves you from tryin to make him look like an clown. You realize how stupid you look here, right?

vikvaughn, the video the anchor is referring to in his rebuttal isn't the same one. he doesn't mention entourage in the one above at all, not a single time and is entirely serious.

Brian:

I do not understand why it is alright for a famous person to joke about popular culture, but I can't. That was Joe's whole argument. He likes Entourage, so he is allowed to talk about it.

I bet you did not watch the original broadcast like I did. He is spinning just a little. During the second hour he did not mention Entourage at all. He makes it seem like he does, but it is no where to be found.

I was not trying to make him look like a clown. That was the other Anchorman comparison people. I respect him and his show. I love Entourage and found it funny. I had no intention of my story getting picked up by major news networks. I wrote it for fun for me readers and friends.

If you watch the show regularly you would know the CNBC anchors spend the majority of monday mornings talking about what happened the night before on Entourage, Joe included. He wasn't serious. If that isn't definitive enough for you just think about it logically. His one and only job is to know financial news. If any one product earned $120 million in a weekend he would spend days on end mentioning it.

Joe Kernan and crew are not your local idiot reporters. they have to know every detail of every story that could possibly effect the markets. Stop speculating, it was just a joke.

I am not speculating. I am sure they are very informed. He has a graduate degree from MIT, I am sure he is very bright. You are not getting what I am saying. I know it was a joke.

Like I said before, I am not trying to make him look like a clown. I am a fan of Entourage. I think the writing is brillant. My blog is more about its impact on popular culture. It was not a slam. I write my blog to blend marketing with pop culture.

Let's face it. Marketing is all about harnessing popular culture. It is basically trying to extend fads as long as possible. some fads just happen to be longer than others. You have coke, and then you have the pet rock.

Wether or not Joe Kernan was joking when he commented on Aquaman is now besides the point. The fact is that millions of people around the world have now seen this clip on this site and on larger better sites (break.com). Joe now looks like an idiot. I would guess that only a small portion of the people who watch the clip and think Joe is an idiot are actually going to dig into the story to try and find out how someone could say something so dumb on tv. Whoever allowed that to be aired needs a slap across the head. Joke or not he looks like a goof.
