Miles And Soledad O'Brien Booted From Anchoring CNN's American Morning; Duo Will Reportedly Stay On As Correspondents Until 'Something Better' Comes Along
— Wed, Apr 4, 2007 —

The journey has ended for Soledad and Miles O'Brien, says CNN. The dual anchors of lackluster American Morning are being demoted reassigned elsewhere, to be replaced by new acquisitions John Roberts (Dan Rather's understudy at CBS) and Kiran Chetry (the recent transfer who "famously" reported for Fox News and CNN in a single, freewheeling afternoon).

And while this marks the second shakeup at the "flagging" news show in two years, the show's emphasis on "straight news over light features" may have more to do with its sliding ratings than the quality of its anchors.

After all, the show starts broadcasting at 6am. And, from the looks of it, early-birds aren't exactly enthralled by reports of soaring gas prices, imminent recessions and the inevitable social security crisis. Not surprising, considering the general rule of thumb seems to be: coffee first, deplorable state of economic affairs second.

Straight news over light features???? Quite the opposite. That is what they have lost as they have turned the news into infotainment.....the same as Fox, the Today show etc. They look like everyone else. No identity. I watch BBC America. Less glitz more meat.

Susan says:

If CNN does not have the ratings expected for American Morning, it is certainly not because of some deficit posed by the anchors. Replacing Miles and Soledad is definitely wrong-headed. (Perhaps the less than stellar ratings have more to do with the incessant coverage of hurricanes, floods, snow storms and other weather-related devastation? Usually, if a hurricane doesn't directly affect me I don't want to watch four hours of coverage in lieu of more globally relevant news. When yet another storm hits Smalltown USA I switch the channel to BBC. Perhaps I am not alone in this.) In addition to their obvious professionalism and competence, Soledad and Miles are intelligent, warm, charming, funny, likeable, and they have a wonderful rapport. They both have excellent interview skills, asking relevant questions -- while remaining polite, of course, and they don't let the interviewee skirt the questions. The two of them are special and it has always been a pleasure to turn on CNN and find Soledad and Miles delivering the news as only they can. As for their replacements, I can't believe CNN has chosen John Roberts and that Chetry chick. (Never heard of her before, but if she's from FOX I imagine she'll be bringing something FOX-like to CNN. She has no credibility.) I am particularly turned off by that stiff, Right-leaning, cold, phony, kiss-ass, unimaginative John Roberts, and I am completely baffled that he would be chosen to anchor American Morning. Needless to say, I won't be watching American Morning as of April 16. I suppose I'll instead be getting my news and commentary from the BBC, Keith Olbermann, and Jon Stewart. Goodbye, CNN. All the best to Miles and Soledad.

I think CNN has made a big mistake. They now reside in the Fox news category. Soledad is one of the best news commentators on TV today. I have watched her for years. I first remember her on the Today show and I must say I didn't like her then. She has grown to become one of the best and I have grown to see her as one who cares. She is so good at getting down to the important issues effecting America by getting down to what is real and what is important. She represents what is good in America. She has convinced me she is someone who cares about her audience not just her ratings. I hope to see her real soon on some other media source. I will certainly watch her where ever she may be. I wish her best because she has truly earned and deserves all that is good. CNN has really blown this. Another example of what is bad in the American news media. I was a Today Show fan for 15 years, but due to the inane nature of the current content on that show, I switched to American Morning about a year and a half ago. I found the O'Brien's show to be educational, newsy, lighthearted at times, but with high standards for content and delivery. It was dignified, in a world that has forgotten what that word means. Both of these journalists will be greatlly missed in this time slot. I certainly hope CNN will be smart enough to give them either another venue or allow them to have special reports on a regular basis. We have little to praise in today's tv, but when one finds two journalists with high intelligence and integrity too, it would follow that they should prevail. Please see that they do. I hated it when Bill Hemmer left and even more when I heard that he went ot Fox. Soledad never let the interveiwees side-step pointed questions and if they continued the viewer knew that Soledad had done her journalistic best and exposed them for who they are. Jack Cafferty, ever the cynic, was tough to lose as well. He brought a unique dimension to the show. Miles grew on me as he developed great rapport with Soledad and Chad Myers. Their wry humor, in addition to professional reporting at its finest was always a treat. Looks like I'll be checking out another network as well. This was tawdry to say the least. I???ve watched American Morning for about 6 years, thru Hemmer, Jack, and Paula. Miles and Soledad WORKED and were credible. During some of this nation???s darkest hours, Katrina and its aftermath, we turned to CNN because in great part of them. Their reporting showed what happened and continued to both happen, go wrong, and the anger of a country at the ineptitude of a governments response. I understand "it's all about the ratings". I believe an overwhelming number of your audience watched them for the news "straight, no chaser" with a little banter on the side for good measure. I'm done with american morning, I tuned out today. We think of Soledad and Miles as newscasters with class, whimsy (much needed in this world) and dedication and we shall miss the repartee between them, which was refreshing. Are the inmates running the asylum. American Morning with "The O'brien's" is, er, was the first thing I would watch in the morning (besides the weather channel).

I, too, think cutting an hour from "AM" was a mistake. I think John Roberts is an excellent reporter and anchor. However, I cannot buy him as the face or morning news! I guess I will put in my 2-cents. I think CNN is making a mistake here. From my point of view CNN has become fixated on celebrity news and often takes a story and works it to death at the expense of other things that are going wrong in the world. I am sick of will they fire Don Imus? I am sick of news shows trying to become Entertainment Tonight! I have lately turned the TV to BBC World News to find out what is going on around the world. I guess that is what they think the public wants and it may be what the majority wants to watch. I just get sick of it. I did respect Soledad and Miles. They were not ???light weights.??? It seemed to me that they were prepared and intelligent journalists (not just news readers with little thought behind them). My first reaction to Kiran Chetry is that she is a ???light weight.??? I will miss Soledad???s intelligence and humor and I will miss the report that she and Miles have developed over the two years together on the show. I have no problem with John Roberts, he is a good journalist, but the show is not much of a news show and it will suffer from the loss of Miles and Soledad. I miss Andy Serwer who left the show to take a better job. He was very insightful in his business reporting. I want news and I like news that is informative. Strange. I don't normally think of myself as conservative, but I sure had gotten comfortable with my morning routine . . which began, EVERY weekday for more than ten years, with CNN. Loved Aaron Brown. Loved Hemmer and Soledad. Cafferty is a treasure who, tho' not gone, has been so effectively buried in the mire that one only stumbles on him occasionally by pleasant surprise. And now this! We woke up Monday morning to the new "Stiffo and Bimbo" show, with nary a clue as to what was afoot. So went surfing for info and found this site. Damn! What a stupid decision. Hard to adequately express my disappointment. I've been a loyal CNN addict since its inception. But this insult is the last straw. Soledad and Miles were the best morning team on TV. Just the right balance of personality and serious journalism. And they had become welcome "friends" in our bedroom. CNN may have been counting on habitual loyalty from long-time viewers like us, but they finally blew it. This pathetic pandering to ratings has dropped them into the bucket of low-brow infotainment with all the other morning tabloids. We'll find our morning company elsewhere . . probably PBS. It means painfully re-training our fingers to grope out a new set of numbers in the half-brain darkness of post snooze-button consciousness, but we have survived tougher challenges. Good-bye CNN. I for one am delighted Soledad is off CNN. I never liked her fast, clipped way of talking. John Roberts is a pro and I like that. I'd never seen Kiren before, so will wait to see how she works out. There is a bit too much of Wolf all day, CNN needs to cut his time and give someone else a chance. I liked Hemmer, and was sorry to see him go. Miles was good too. My favorite is Lou Dobbs because he tells the truth.

I never liked theaddition of Miles O'Brien to American Morning, because of his mostly monotone method of speaking. I often wondered when his presence would bring the program down. This was it however sudden it may have seemed.

On the other hand Soledad was the spark plug that made the engine go. Though no matter how bright and personable Ms. O'Brien was or is she could not keep the rating up when Time Warner was only interested in airing commercials, and morphing what was once a no nonsense news organization into something no one could understand. Was it news, or entertainment? Time Warner has ruined every former Turner Network it has touched. CNN is now the worst of the worst, too little news, too, too many commercials, and too much time reporting on Hollyweird, Hollywood.

The one bright star is Lou Dobbs, but given Time Warner's track record this too is distained to go down the drain, then who will get the blame?

I can't believe CNN booted Soledad and Miles in favor of the CBS reject and the FOX News babe. I switched to American Morning from the Today Show about two years ago because I was so sick of Donald Trump, American Idol updates and self-help crap, but mainly because of Soledad O'Brien. She is by far the best interviewer on any morning talk show, especially the one she did with Michael Brown during the Katrina aftermath when she so aptly expressed the astonishment and disgust of the whole nation. I don't know what I'll watch in the mornings now ... just 15 minutes of John and Kiran yesterday convinced me it definitely won't be CNN. And for the record, there are many of us out here who really do want the news and not the fluff.

Michelle from Madison says:

Nancy Grace was proven wrong again on all of her assertions on the Winkler case on Thursday April 19th. Doesn???t CNN management ever watch Nancy???s shows anymore?

Nancy Grace has documented herself to be incorrect, in some fashion, on just about every single case Nancy has attempted to cover over the recent months. While Nancy continues to rack up more potential lawsuit cases against herself and CNN for her continued defamation, slander, libel, and even the wrongful death Nancy is currently linked to by Nancy???s own possible illegal actions, it is well documented that Nancy Grace is not un-willing to commit even more such crimes against even more and more victims.

Some Courts have already reprimanded Nancy Grace for some of her documented misconduct. But, Nancy continues to rack up more and more violations of Civil Law, and possibly even Criminal Law too, and it is hard to keep up with the continued violations-count, and her seemingly constant violations Nancy has been committing against victim after victim after victim.

The Lawsuits that are soon to be coming from VanderSloot, Howard Stern of the Anna Nichol Smith case, and others against Nancy infractions (according to the attorneys) and the upcoming Lawsuits from all the Duke defendants, as well as possibly from Winkler herself according to her attorney Ferese, Nancy???s continued law violations appear to be occurring on nearly every single day Nancy is on television.

My goodness, Don Imus just lost his job for stating something that could, in-fact, may have been a factual and accurate statement by his derogatory statements towards the women???s basketball team. How CNN can allow Nancy to document even more violations against even more and more victims is just senseless and a total shame for CNN to just stand by and allow this irreprehensible behavior to continue against more and more victims from Nancy Grace. It is truly just ridiculous. Perhaps it is time to change from CNN to broadcasting Nancy Grace on something like comedy central where her conduct more appropriates is representative.

Has CNN already forgotten that Nancy Grace has current lawsuits filed against her for Nancy???s role in the death of a non-convicted victim who Nancy Grace had called on the telephone? Wake up CNN, Imus had to apparently be removed from the airways, and he wasn???t even directly involved in connection of someone???s death. Nor was Imus continuing to victimize more victims as Nancy has documented that she is continuing.

Maybe you, CNN, can provide the public with the ???magic number??? CNN feels is the appropriate-limit that Nancy has to achieve with her slanderous, libelous, her connections to a possible wrongful death actions Nancy has documented against another victim(s), and her defamational statements against victims before CNN will take similar actions as MSNBC had to do towards Don Imus.

Everyone will be anxious to hear what the ???magic number??? CNN will tolerate as the group of victims of Nancy Grace grows and grows from her illegal, immoral, and illicit conduct towards so many victims.

And, how can CNN allow a person like Nancy Grace to be around any true victim at Virginia Tech while Nancy has current lawsuits filed against her for Nancy???s alleged involvement in an early death of a emotionally distraught young mother. The management of CNN needs some serious investigation-measures to be implemented immediately, for the safety of current and potential future victims of the unprofessional conduct of Nancy Grace.

How CNN can allow Nancy Grace to have any access to victims at Virginia Tech is a matter that should, perhaps, be investigated by the authorities and by attorneys for the potential victims of her unprofessional conduct. There is a reason Nancy Grace has lawsuits pending against her, with more lawsuits expected in the near future. For CNN to allow Nancy Grace to have contact with any victim is a crime in and of itself, and needs further consideration by the authorities and by attorneys for the victims sake and safety. Allowing Nancy Grace to have access to any victim is like placing a Predator
near a schoolyard while the trial is ongoing for the alleged Predator. It should just not happen.;amp;amp;amp;amp;ml_gateway=&ml_gateway_id=&ml_comedian=&ml_runtime=&ml_context=show&ml_origin_url=%2F&ml_playlist=&lnk=&is_large=true

Soledad and Miles were intelligent, thought provoking, and underneath the humor they displayed on the surface, both serious minded and extremely intelligent individuals. Also, being on the West Coast, I enjoyed watching Aaron Brown at 7:00 pm and Lou Dobbs at 8:00 pm every evening. Well, before I knew it, Anderson Cooper came in and knocked out the only two reasons I watched CNN at night. I watch HGTV during the evening time slots now because I prefer their reruns to Anderson Cooper. At least I could watch American Morning, but no, first Bill Hemmer is replaced with Miles O'Brien, it took a while but he grew on me, and then my favorite male on American Morning, Jack Cafferty is reassigned to sidekick to Wolf "pukey" Blitzer. Now, with the replacement of Soledad O'Brien and Miles O'Brien, I have decided that Turner Classic Movies has better programming during the same time slot as American Morning. John Roberts was a great back up anchor to Dan Rather and should have got the gig instead of "Aren't I so Cute" Katie Couric. By the way John, the face lift looks great, but you're still too stiff for waking people up in the morning to report news. As for the replacement for Soledad, she can't even compete. Honey, you need to go back to FOX because just like FOX, you don't know how to report the news or reach across to the intelligent viewers of American Morning.
I guess I just read my morning newspaper, check out and wait for Brian Williams (a real news HUNK, Anderson Cooper is NOT) on NBC Nightly News to get my news now.

The inane production of FOX and FRIENDS, the sappy NBC morning offering (I can't even remember the name!) ran me to CNN, and I have been an avid fan, waking up to it every morning, and although I missed the presence of Bill Hemmer and my favorite grouch, Jack Cafferty, Soledad and Miles did keep me loyal to CNN. I have now switched to MSNBC, and my finger gets tired from the morning gumbo of clicking back and forth from MSNBC, CNN, FOX and NBC. Smerconish has been interesting, but I don't know if he really has staying power. Guess I'll get going in the morning watching WASHINGTON JOURNAL on C-Span. It has been a little more stable and dependable then the musical chairs that has gotten me pretty dizzy on the Cable networks morning shows. All the best to Soledad and Miles.

john roberts evidently went to the ted baxter school of broadcasting. his ad libbing with personal anecdotes embarrasses me even in the privacy of my own home. and kiran. presents the news as though she had been out all night working for an escort service and then took a little speed to do the show. she is all fox and not at all foxy. cnn must have a death wish.

but, cnn does have a sense of humor, too. their motto: "the most news in the morning". what news? how much weight don shula lost? the anna nicole smith saga? the kid who called 911? or maybe what the maverick cum true american hero mccain said today about what a castastrophe it would be to end the war? or some voyeuristic scandal du jour?

cnn has lost its credibility as a 24 news channel. it's more like a 4 hour news channel: between 4 and 8p.m. unless, of course, if you get a propane truck on fire on a highway...then we get a little extra. with all the aerial coverage and such.

it's all about the dumbing down of america. we are treated like those with no attention span and the media give us what they think we want: the weather, shula's wife's diet success story, birkhead's dna results, high-speed car chases, what they will be telling us about later, 9-ball instead of straight pool, deal or no deal instead of chess matches, rap instead of jazz, pronunciation of words with consonants missing, misuse of the verb "to be" in case and number, and the word "obviously" so overused that it is the new "uh". the crawl has become more informative than the chatter.

at least miles was smart and soledad was engaging.

I thought Soledad was the best Anchor CNN had, plus she was one of the few Anchors who would go out in the field and develop and Report her own Story. Carla was the only other Anchor who have did that on occasion, while holding down an Anchor position.

The Ratings declined in recent Months because they bled the Show of all it content. With the War in Iraq being more dangerous for the Reporters, little "on the ground" reporting was possible. They let the entertainment reporters go a year or so earlier, and Jack went to Wolf before that, and the last item was the dumbing down of the Stock Report that Ali give now.

There wasn't much left in the Show for Soledad and Miles to do. They ended up acting as "straight people" for a lot of reports that happened the day before, and they just kept re-running them over and over again. Until the 9-am Crew come in to they do the same thing.

I think CNN has found the trick of making the same or greater profits by delivering less and less product to the public. If you look at a lot of their Programming and take out the reruns, they aren't really delivering much News Contents, and definitely very little substance. So I don't think they expect the Ratings to increase as a results of this move, they have to, first of all change the structure of the program.

Plus the fact they have one group of Pundents that give them answers they like, and they keep using them over and over again as if they are gospel, but it's mostly propaganda and Spin to support their own agenda or position, and that is also keeping them down in the ratings. They don't try and enlarge the pool of Pundents so the American Public will get a true variety of opinions from all segments of the Country, which they should be doing.

My work schedule prevented me from my usual routine of waking up with the CNN Morning Show with Soledad and Miles. When I returned to regular hours last week and found the two new anchors, I assumed they were just filling in. Then they were there again this week and no mention of the O'Brien's. I had to do a bit of research to find that SO and MO have been replaced. I'm very dissappointed. I can't stand the other network morning shows with their cooking spots and human interest stories. CNN is the only network that I'll watch in the AM, and now I don't have that to look forward to. I'll probably still watch because I don't have other options, but I'm really bummed and will sorely miss Soledad and Miles -- especially Soledad. If you are out there, Ms. O'Brien, you are a true professional and at the top of your field. Take care of yourself and your family. I know you will land on your feet and prove to CNN what a poor decision this was.

BTW, CNN -- Also a bonehead move to dump Bill Hemmer years ago. I enjoy catching a glimpse of him on Fox News occasionally now. And how about Andy Serwer? Velshi is okay, but I miss Andy.
