Breaking: M4M WABC Anchor Steve Bartelstein Axed / Jossip
Breaking: M4M WABC Anchor Steve Bartelstein Axed
— Tue, Mar 13, 2007 —

Exclusive

"Page not found." That's the error WABC's website will hand to you if you try to bring up the profile of news anchor Steve Bartelstein. (Google Cache version here.) Which makes sense — given that he was just axed, we're told.

The Eyewitness News this Morning and Eyewitness News at Noon anchor has been clashing with brass for some time now, we're told, but "the last straw" was when he slept through a Good Morning America insert on Friday. GMA was covering the Bronx fire (that killed 10 people) and Steve was expected to chime in during the commercial break to plug WABC's coverage. But he was a no show, and the network was forced to air two minutes of weather and traffic. Producers were pissed.

Steve has a history of not showing up for work and, allegedly, a raging crystal meth addiction. We're told ABC usually allows one rehab stint for employees — or 16 less than Hollywood casting directors allow talent.

Then again, you'll remember way back to Dec. 2005, when a similar WABC incident went down with Bartelstein, where WABC's coverage preempted GMA, and Steve and co-anchor Lori Stokes "looked as if they were blissed out on hash brownies." And back in November, he showed up 20 minutes after the 5am broadcast began.

Oh yeah, and what was that about the "M4M stalking" lawsuit that was filed against him?

It's as if, we don't know, he had it coming.

That sucks. He and Lori were so good together. I think ABC made a huge mistake. It has been the top morning news show for sometime. They had Joe Torres on today ( the man has no personality). I liked watching Steve and Lori in the morning - it was a loose, relaxed atmosphere in the morning. He will be missed. I know there were some issues but the rating said it all. They weren't just Steve but the combination of Steve, lori, Bill and Joe. I enjoyed watching. They keep replacing personalities with people with NO personality at all. Sade for Roz, Joe for Charles, Lee for Sam. I suspect those top rated newscasts will dwindle. 5:00 is only watchable becuase of Diana Williams. If she goes, it's done.

For everyone here that is a Steve Bartelstein fan, you should know that the station gave him more rope than most. Steve was constantly late for work, his drug usage was well-known, and the only reason it went on for as long as it did with him getting away with this behavior was because the numbers were good. Everyone knew it was drugs -- why he was late for work. The man lives up the street from the studio for Pete's sake! It is a sad case of someone who got a lot of light on them by being on in the #1 market and didn't know how to handle it.

I've watched 7 for years, but in the last year I've been channel surfing because Steve was getting on my last nerve. Channel 5 is the best alternative in the morning. They are relaxed and chatty and get along well, and the weather guy is a babe. I might check out the replacement on 7 but I'm afraid I'm sticking with Good Day New York. I have to wonder if management started to see a trend, with people finally being turned off by Steve's inability to communicate and keep it together on the air.

Steve does not live up the block from the studio.. that's Regis..

Steve didn't get fired because he's gay.. why bring that up? Would anyone have mentioned that a Straight newscaster was fired? They just add the Gay comment to make it more newsworthy.

ABC gave him many breaks inspite of his tardiness... yea, he messed up there.. was it drugs? Who knows? If it was... instead of crucifying the man, pray for him.. hope that he takes control of his life.. If this was YOU would you not want others to have some compassion for your error in judgements?

I'm sure there are a whole bunch of skeletons in the closets of ABC and by next week, this will be old news...

Let's focus our time and attention on things that do make a difference, things we can change.. instead of standing in judgement of one man or any one for that matter.

Hang in there Steve... God Bless you..

Dear Sandra,

Thanks very much for your comments, which I totally agree with. We all can be annoying at times, and perhaps he did sort of rub some people the wrong way, but I still considered him to be one of the best anchors on television. Mr. Bartelstein, Lori, Bill, Joe and the rest were so close, this is something ABC 'can not' duplicate, no matter what.
Perhaps in his case this is a 'wake-up call', which I hope and pray he takes heed of. I've learned to be extremely leery of things printed by the press, because there's very little 'truth' to most of it.
I could tell something was wrong this morning by the look on Lori Stokes face, her body movements, the way Bill Evans (The weatherman) was acting, and the fact that Joe Torres 'didn't' say he was filling in for Steve Barelstein.
I wish nothing but the best for him and pray that whatever's wrong, he will be able to put it right, and have an even "better" future. Perhaps when he gets it together the 'powers that be' will allow him to come back, if he so desires, becaue something tells me ABC News (At least the morning and afternoon addition) "will never be the same" without him, no matter who they replace him with.
God bless and keep him, Lori, and the rest of their crew.

Although he did mumble some, the comraderie and banter is unsupassed on morning news television, and I truly enjoyed him. He showed kindness and compassion when most anchors just read the news. I always felt he was truly a ice person. Good luck to you Steve, I will truly miss you.

I really don't believe you knuckleheads bemoaning the loss of ABC7's Steve Bartelstein. Look at the record for chrissake! He was late, he slept through a cut-in, he posted nude pictures of himself on his AOL homepage. He seemingly cared more about himself and scoring another hit of meth than he cared about (a) the news and (b) his fan base (many of whom seem to have gone through at least one or two 12-step programs based upon the comments I've seen here). You numbskulls! What color is the sky in your world? Bartelstein was a walking, talking time bomb waiting to blow up. And he did. But don't worry. I'll bet he'll show up on Channel 2 in a year, after his non-compete clause runs out and he's gone through the Viacom rehab program. I'm certain Les Moonves would just love to have him at 5, 6 and 11 with all the other imbicils at the Broadcast Center.

I love Eyewitness News This Morning. I wake up each and every morning at 5:00am. Steve and Lori were more than just co anchors they were best friends. The entire Crew gets along like one big happy family. I did enjoy David Ushery and Nancy Loo, however the combination of Steve Bartestein, Lori Sokes, Bill Evans, Joe Nolan, John DelGorno, Joya Dass, Sandy Kenyan, and Sri Srivasen was really nice in the morning. Steve, Lori, Bill and Joe just had chemistry that worked, they literally made Eyewitness News this Morning go from number six (NY1 even beat it) to number one. I met Steve at the ABC7/95.5WPLJ charity softball game, he seems like areal nice guy. I think if he has a problem he should get help. I will miss him and I hope they get someone who gets as much chemistry as those two had. The four of them combined were a real family and he will be missed. Would Evans and Nolan hang out with him at sporting events? Would they join him at his house for his Superbowl party? I don't think so. If what is being said about him is true, the illusion that ABC created with the news team is a fraud. Many of my friends and I feel that his absence is like the death of a close friend. ABC you did a great job embedding these anchors into our heads as a team effort, and created his image. Now people want to make him a monster. Taking him off the air without an explanation why is horrible. When The View fired Star Jones at least they offered us a @#%%^ story about what happened. Move over ABC hello channel 4.

The topper to all this is that Bartelstein, in a NYPost interview after he was axed, expressed hopes that he could become a little league softball coach. Actually, given Steve's preferences, it's understood that his presence in any sports locker room might be less than welcomed --- not the least of all a pre-teen one.

That aside, it's incredible that his alleged AOL "nude" pics never turned up anywhere on the net, suggesting this element of the story never really happened.

But, his endless stream of inane comments --- many of which had a gay sub-text (always bringing up the topic of speedos and once, all but drooling when a story concerned UPS drivers opting for shorts over trousers) won't be missed. Nor will his virtually indecipherable, hoarse, whispery voice.

Does anyone here know if there's a separate website for Mr. Bartelstein, because if so I'd like to be able to post there is possible?
As for the nay-sayers here, I just chuckle when I read your comments as no one on this earth is perfect, nor will we ever be.
While a part of me 'kind' of understood why they did what they 'thought' they had to do, it would have been nice if like the others here said, they would have perhaps offered him help and let him come back when things worked out.
This man has made mistakes just like the rest of us, and it did my heart good when he told that reporter from the Daily News and I quote "People in New York have been fantastic to me since I got here," he said. "I never identified with people as much as I have here."
Thats good enough for me and I wish him nothing but the best that life has to offer.
As the saying goes "there but for the grace of God goeth I."
P.S. I've tried to watch since he's been gone, but something just doesn't feel right. My heart goes out to Lori, Bill, Joe, and the rest of the team.

I feel awful that he is no longer there. I'll hope and pray that one day soon things get straightened out and Steve can somehow return. Lori must be so upset not having him there with her, they really had great chemistry together!

MOST OF US THAT ARE POSTING THESE MESSAGES ARE VERY CARING PEOPLE WHO KNOW A GOOD PERSON WHEN WE SEE ONE, AND BELIEVE IN SECOND CHANCES. NO ONE IS PERFECT- NOT EVEN YOU! I liked steve , if any of the crap that people are saying about him are true,he should have been given a chance to go to rehab. steve , lori, bill and joe are the best combo in morning tv. you got dumb managers who wouldn't know what works if it bit them on butt. ratings are going to suffer starting with yours truly, two three weeks suspension yes termination no rethink this and call him back tell him he was suspended for three weeks

I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT STEVE UNTIL TODAY, WHEN I GUESSED THAT HE WAS OFF FOR SO LONG.
I AGREE WITH EVERYONE THAT MISSES HIM, THEY WERE A GREAT TEAM AND I LOVED WATCHING THEM. HOWEVER, I GUARANTEE YOU THAT ABC MUST HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING TO SET HIM STRAIGHT, SINCE IT'S ALL ABOUT THE $$$$$ AND THEY WOULDN'T GIVE THAT UP WITHOUT A GOOD FIGHT.
WE WILL AND DO MISS YOU STEVE, GOOD LUCK AND PLEASE GET CLEAN.

We also assumed that Steve Bartelstein was on vacation. Very sorry he is off the air, he was the only morning, noon or night newsperson with the guts to show some heart. If the gossip is true and he had some personal demons, then ABC owed the man ( who boosted their ratings enormously...) a chance to fix things. Funny that the networks adore stars like Lohan, Spears et al who mess up with sex, drugs and rock 'n roll because the incessant reporting of their personal sorrows draws viewers. Yet when "one of our own," as they love to say, has a problem, he's axed without a word to his fans.

Since we are forced now to watch ZZZZzzzz boring a.m. news people, we will not watch them on ABC, in protest. Too bad for Bill Ritter and Lori Stokes, losing a friend and wonderful co-host.

I was very sad to hear the news that Steve was fired. I love watching Steve, Lori, Bill and Joe in the morning. Trutfully I was never a news watcher, but once I found channel 7 and took one look at Steve I was hooked. That man is something to look at..he is hot!!! I enjoyed listening to Steve & Lori...they made me laugh. They made the news worth watching. I actually looked forward to getting up & putting the news on!!!
Steve Bartelstein you will be missed!!!!
The morning news crew is not complete without you Steve.

I THINK THAT FIRING STEVE IS A DISGRACE. HE WAS ONE OF THE REASONS I WOKE EARLY TO SEE THE SHOW. I ENJOYED HIS VERY CUTE REFERENCES TO DIFFERENT SITUATIONS AND HIS WAY OF BROADCASTING. I THINK YOU MADE A BIG MISTAKE AND SHOULD BRING HIM BACK.

I can't believe what I just read. I've been wondering what happened to Steve Bartlestein. Maybe vacation or medical leave? What a shock when I went on 7online to find out and nothing was said. So I went on Google for his name and found this site. If he does indeed have a 'problem', are they helping him by getting him help? It is kind of unbelieveable. Miss USA got help when she openly disrespected her crown and herself. Lori, Bill and Joe must be besides themselves. They all seemed real close. I wish him the best.
