Steve Bartelstein: The Mario Vasquez of Local News?
— Fri, Mar 16, 2007 —

Yesterday's call for clarification about Steve Bartelstein's numerous scandals at WABC yielded some fruitful results. We heard the channel had begun looking into former allegations against the axed news anchor, mostly of the sexual harassment variety. Turns out, they're investigating indeed.

WABC is revisiting sexual harassment charges made by now-former network writer Roderick McCollum, we're told, who was summarily paid off to keep his mouth shut. (In Bartelstein's version of the events, the charges were "dropped.") Even after the two parties reached an agreement, Bartelstein followed the guy to Chicago "once or twice" and "caused drama," says a source.

"It's really sad," continues our tattler, because "all this guy wanted was an apology."

And while he may not get an apology, he may get an in-person run-in with his alleged former victimizer. We're told this ex-WABC staffer is planning a move back to New York.

In the meantime, Bartelstein might also be facing some repercussions. If his new harassment charges are true (i.e. the part where he went to Chicago to chase his alleged prey), he could be liable to repay ABC the settlement money for violating the agreement ... if he didn't blow it on a date with Tina already.

There are those at WABC who will confirm these stories off the record. The thinking was always that Bartlestein had something on somebody at the station, but it turns out his quarry was paid to shut up. Doesn't that make him complicit at some level?

I will miss Steve Bartlestein. He seems like a good man with a good heart and IS a top notch broadcaster. Nobody can lay a glove on him when it comes to his sports reporting. If he peruses these boards, Steve, A LOT OF US are rooting for you.

Steve has had a problem back to his days cruising the dunes of Folly Beach in South Carolina. He was very closeted back then, but you could see him frequently at the gay section of Folly Beach but never planting himself in the gay section, always just visiting. I had a friend that did him in the dunes. He said Steve was hung. We called him Bartlequeen. But, truly we were just jealous. Steve had it all; a great job and really hot. Once or twice he came into the Arcade (Gay bar, no longer exists) in Charleston, SC. but only if he was really trashed. I felt sorry for him. He had everything going for him but he seemed to be really unhappy. I was sad to see that all these bad things have happened to him. I hope he gets it together. I think he is very talented.

I just discovered that Steve WAS let go. I wasn't sure this past week, as I don't always catch the newscast but after this morning, when it had been more than the week past he wasnn't on, that I dug deeper.
It's an unfortunate turn of events, as I always liked his style and, as another poster mentioned before, he has always been top-notch in sports reporting, since that was his niche previously. I would hope that WABC had given him more than just one chance to redeem himself but... if he indeed was the "raging meth addict" so implied, he may not have been interested in rehab. I've been there with the former sax payer in my band. No matter what we tried, we could not get him to give that or drinking to excess up. He had to be let go.
Regarding his alleged sexual escapades, if true as well, that would have been a bone of contention as well. NOT because he might have been gay but to the lengths he supposedly went to corner this former ABC writer, now (?) in Chicago, Steve's home turf.
Yes, I did enjoy his newscasts but I also at times, would groan at his name droping of celebrities he'd met and similar things. I hope he gets the ttreatment he needs and gets on with the business of reporting the news. I wish him the best.

It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination but it needs to be done if he wants his broadcasting career to continue. Somehow, I hope that he receives the help needed to address his meth habit (if that's the case). If he in fact is gay - so what. He was great in the morning and I hope that somehow he returns as a whole person without anymore addiction in his life. Steve, don 't give up. Derick Centeno says:

The team and program will move on, each person is very professional and very good in picking up the slack. The value of what Steve bought to the program is real and unique.

However, if the issue is one of addiction then Steve has to come to believe that what he brings to the team which is of value is himself, not the drugs. Unless he himself comes to that awareness his return to the program, his return to any TV production anywhere on the planet or any other work will be a waste of time -- his and everyone elses. No one pays anyone to waste time.

Perhaps the issue for him isn't drugs at all; it could be a spine problem which induces a shutdowm to his system similar to how a missing or intermitent connection induces a shutdown in electronics. Such problems are not unheard of within Chiropractic or Neurological circles; the treatment of such problems however is extremely confusing as the nature of this problem is not well understood at all.

The problem for friends, admirers, those who love him, and those who would employ him are the same -- Steve has to decide what he will do and how.

If Steve will do what needs to be done, then this will all pass and he will have and keep success. There is no success as valued or cherished as true self-mastery.

It is the only path to sane and productive living. The good thing is that any man or woman can do this, for as we all know -- what one man or woman can do, so can another. It's easy to piss away one's talent and skills into a stupor of senselessness.

However, everyone knows that preparing and shaping one's self so that one's nature is balanced, flexible and as sharply as honed as an athlete's physical form -- this achievement is not so easy. However, understanding that this is the best choice for one's self is always a hard realization. It is a realization which can be achieved, though, while alive. One value in going for such a choice is that not only can one achieve command over one's self -- what one produces actually becomes better and of higher quality.

I will very much miss Steve's work appearing on the NYC airwaves. However I will very much applaude and root for Steve's future success in mastering himself. It is my belief that all good persons likewise will applaude his journey towards that goal and wish him every success via prayer or/and good will.

I live in Montana and have been lucky enough to watch/hear Steve at 5:00 AM (our time) each morning and at 10:00 AM (your lunch), for quite some time now.

In my opinion, he is a Master with Ease of News Delivery, Charm, Chemistry, and certainly appears to be one of the 'good guys!' On several occasions, I remember wondering how in the world he kept such a great attitude with ALL those hours he was required to be on-air!! What is involved 'before' and 'after' air time for gravy's sake!!!??? (Hi, Rachel)

I hope he is able to get support from the Station; and, IF there are other problems - I hope SOMEONE is there in his corner and will HELP!!! He doesn't need, nor will it be beneficial to him, to be in an environment of anger and negativity and judgment.

Seems to me that the Station should have done MORE SOONER!!!

But, then again, Big Business is just that - Business - and damn the person that screws up their bottom line !!!

I am so sorry to hear that Steve is gone. Steve, Lori, Bill and Joe were the best four! The four of them had good and wonderful chemistry. You will not find another one wiht the same chemistry. Why is it, that ABC cannot help him and bring him back once he has put his act together. Also, this would make a good story, as did when Michelle had the skin cancer and I remember Roz Abrams, that had some type of surgery procedure, and they both got on air and talk about it.

Steven once he is better - he can talk about his recuperation and how he got there, as well what lead him to using drugs if that is true. He is ot the only one, and will not be the last!

I want to wish him NOTHING but the BEST and to let him know that the viewers LOVE HIM so and MISS him greatly.

I hope that Bill, Lori and Joe reach out to him to help him and support him.

STEVE, HANG in there and do not let all the bad press get to you - after all the news is what you do best! GET HELP!
I do not care if you are gay or not, WHO CARES! You are still my favorite morning anchorman. You have humor, knowledge and also class. YOU brought all that to the morning neews and more.

ABC should have just giving you a leave of absence until you put all your eggs in the basket and got yourself better! What can we do to bring you back?

The news in the morning will not be the same without

I am very sad, hope all goes well and hope to see you back in the news. We do love you. GOD BLESS YOU and I hope your MOM is fine. We know how much you love her.

Like most of the other comments, I also just did some digging after realizing Steve was no longer with ABC/New York. The morning team was unbeatable, as to me it has been since I began watching the morning news in the mid sixties.
I do not believe in gossip, or "Jossip", but I found my way to this site during the search. As an alcholic/drug abuser in recovery, I can tell you that Steve needs to find himself and recover through a program of Spirituality. For most of us, this is the only we can save ourselves. This is not cult/religious or nutty advice. It just is. Rumors and gossip only hurt the individual in question. Steve is who and what he is. If he wants to save himself, he will. I hope he does. And the fact that he is gay should be left out of the picture, for those that care about him, as I do. He is a human being who may have a serious health problem. Please, for Steve's sake and for others in need of help, stop the gossip. We do not need to hear about beach romps and being in love with him and sad because he is gay. That just does not make sense. I will most likely not return to this site, but I can only hope that Steve will save himself, with or without those around him who do love him, and that he will find happiness and health and live out the rest of his life in peace.

When you have the support of a good staff such as Steve that even thought he is not there the public keeps coming back but for how long, all you have to do is look at Lori's face, she misses her friend, and I do believe they were close friends, she understood him like not one else. As far as Steve being late or sleeping in his office, that happens to all of us who work at one time or another. However, ABC really has to think about the chemistry of Steve, Lori, Bill and Joe Nolan who are in my estimation the best team in broadcasting.

Steve appeared to me to be a very nice, funny, intelligent man and he also appeared to have a huge heart. I truly believe that ABC has made a big big mistake and the ratings will show this in time. Lori looks absolutely lost without Steve, don't you think?

However, almost instantly thereafter I began noticing a somewhat slur in Steve's voice that would at times annoy me, but again what he brought to the show and the chemistry he and the other cast memeber has over time I forgot about it. What I remember most about Steve is his compassion and passion and his comments he would make at the end of the story if it has hit him in the heart. A quality you really don't see in newscasting these days, it's all business, news are delivered with such dry and I mean dry deliverance. In and out. But Steve was spontaneous and I loved that. I'm not going to even comment on the gay story or 'gossip' we never hear the real story. But I will comment on the firing, I think it's unfair to say ABC acted unfairly, we don't know what goes on from day to day at the station and we don't know what they did or didn't do but I do know if there's remotely any truth to drug addiction, it could effect his professionaly life and most importantly his health and mental state. Sometimes we need to hit rock bottom to get back up again, maybe this is it. Rememer God has a plan and everything happens for a reason. One last note, please tell me they're not replacing him with Joe Torres, it won't work. I love Bill Evans and of course Lori (even though sometimes your voice do a crescendo that at times seems staged) but I love you anyway, Joe Nolan's ok, I at times get the feeling that he doesn't want to be there or he's just to serious.

I can't believe this, the morning is just not the same without Steve joking around with Lori and Bill. For years I have started my day this way. Please bring him back and if he needs help, help him. Also, his personal life has nothing to do with the way he comes across in the morning. There is no other personality to take his place. The group worked together with chemistry. I say bring him back.

I didn't know there was a problem with addiction but I'm not surprised. Steve was all over the place talking over everybody, putting in his commentary no matter what the topic, talking so fast even a New Yorker like myself couldn't keep up that early in the morning. I thought that Bill Evans and Steve were actually buffoons most mornings. It wasn't Caroline's Comedy Club, it was the news.

I had a knee replacement on March 2nd, and thought Steve was on vacation. I was sorry to hear he is gone. He cannot be replaced by anyone else. Lori, Bill, and Joe must be lost without him. I've been watching ABC for a long time, but I do think you need to bring Steve back. If your reading these Steve, then I want you to know you are in my prayers. I miss you.

I just found out what happened to Steve Bartlestein today and boy was I surprised. I truly miss seeing Steve doing the news. He is easy on the eyes and a great anchor with Lori Stokes. ABC News needs to bring him back. I now change to channel 4 NBC because Steve is not on. Whatever his problem - drugs, get him help. If his sexual preference is different, keep it in the closet and don't let me know about it. I know it's not biblical and wrong in the sight of God, but keep it under wraps. BRING BACK STEVE, GIVE HIM THE HELP HE NEEDS.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! For three weeks I have wondered where Steve has been. Now I find out that he was fired and all this stuff comes out about his personel life. This is a very talented, lovable, caring, devoted.... I can't come up with enough positive things to say about him. I actually spoke to him on the phone a couple of times regarding some sports memorabilia my father had collected. He was so down to earth and I felt like I was talking to an old friend. The chemistry between him and Lori and Bill and Joe was amazing! They were my family in the morning. I feel like my life has been changed, as funny as that may sound. Steve, if you are reading this, I hope everything works out for you. Just remember, you have alot of support and love out there and everyone is pulling for you. Show those idiots at ABC what a huge mistake they made. I miss ya buddy, BUT YOU WILL BE BACK!!!!!!!!!!

I just found out that Steve was fired. I am also shocked. I have been watcing the ABC morning news for years. The chemistry isn't the same with this new guy. The chemistry between Lori, Bill and Joe was perfect. Obviously something happened to make ABC fire Steve. It's a shame it isn't a situation that could not have been worked out. I don't care about his sexual orientation. That is his business. I thought he was a fantastic newscaster and he was witty and had a good heart.

I have been missing Steve Bartelstein for awhile now. I just found out today that he won't be back.
How sad for him and what a real loss to his fans.
This guy offered quality reporting and he did it with a lot of heart and a great sense of humor.
I have no idea how much of the gossip is fact or fiction. I so hope he gets help if there is a substance abuse problem.
Like others have said, he is very talented and I have total faith that he will rise above any problems and return in glory.
His private life is just that. Who cares?
So many newscasters wish they had his natural ability to do the job with such flare. He is missed a lot and certainly deserves another shot. My day is not quite the same with Steve missing. I hope he knows how much support he has.

I missed watching Steve and the morning crew together. The morning news is definately not the same. I don't even bother watching anymore. ABC shoul have tried to help Steve instead of casting him aside like an old shoe. Steve if you are reading this please get yourself together and come back to New York.

My television has been broken and I couldn't watch ABC. When I noticed Steve was gone, I thought he was on vacation. I LOVE Steve Bartlestein. I didn't think much of Lorie until a couple of years ago, Steve got some really bad press while she was on a vacation. When she returned, she said, "I'm sorry I wasn't here for you." WOW! What humanity from an ice-woman. I loved their chemisty. I saw them once in the audience at a program at Lincoln Center. Couldn't take my eyes off him. He's really handsome, and he was nice to people who approached him.

If he is really in trouble, I hope he gets the help he needs. His is a star that needs to rise again.

I was loyal to ABC news until I recently. I just can't take it with the stiff who has replaced Steve. Lori looks absolutely broken hearted and there is no chemistry between her and the stiff.... I only tolerated the weather guy and Joe Nolan because I loved Lori and Steve.... I may have to switch because I can't leave the house as uncomfortable as the stiff and the others make me feel. HUGE Loss not having Steve and Lori in the AM

Thank God Steve's not deceased...because that's what I thought when I didn't see him and Lori looked so "sad"!
I loved the checmistry between Lori and Steve and the "supporting cast", because Lori and Steve were the STARS and the ONLY reason I watched channel 7 news !
Steve was so sweet when gave Lori the diamond "7" necklace and so many "caring friendly" moments they shared endeared me to this "GREAT TEAM"! SHAME ON YOU! "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"! In these tims of "stress and conflict" Steve's concern, humor, and spirit were a "welcome relief" for my early mornings!
Handle your business Channel 7 excuetives and do the right thing and BRING STEVE BACK! I have STOPPED WATCHING CHANNEL NEWS and will encourage my friends, family and colleagues to stop watching too! Unless you correct your obvious mistake ASAP!

He was the best thing for that Morning show, he and Loris worked SO well together...This is sad and I hope that when this is all said and done he will be on the news again...I am with the other folks who can't bare to watch that dry, guy on with Lori now...and she does look like she doesn't want to be there, not at all the same personality when Steve was with her...
