Ever tried to come up with a clever headline? It's actually far more difficult than you might imagine. In fact, not many can master the delicate balance of clever wordplay, straightforward news and an informative synopsis in 10 words or less.
Which is why whenever there's "breaking" news (and we use the term loosely to incorporate ABC's recent announcement regarding Isaiah Washington's termination) we like to see what the veterans came up with.
After scanning the internet and filtering out all the boring "Washington Fired From Grey's Anatomy" fare, we've gathered the most impressive entrees for your convenience…after the jump.
Hecklerspracy, UK first grabbed our attention with this short, but to the point submission: "Isaiah Washington’s Big Gay-Hating Mouth Gets Him Sacked."
Meanwhile, the New York Post totally phoned it in today with "'GREY'S ANATOMY' DOCTOR IS OUT", while some random Canadian news outlet proved that it's possible to try too hard. Their entry, focusing on T.R. Knight's contract renewal, reads: "By George! There Will Be No 'Bye George' On Grey's Anatomy." (Zing!)
But the ultimate "Missed Opportunity Award" goes to ABC's local affiliate in Pennsylvania, who placed their emphasis on Washington's reaction to the news withe the headline, "Isaiah Washington's Not Taking it Lying Down."
So close, you guys!
Except the headline would have been that much better, had you only added a (strategically placed) extra word or two. Like, for instance, this:
"Isaiah Washington's Not Taking It Lying Down, From Behind."
See what we did there? It's headline magic! However, E! Online wins our ultimate admiration today by coming up with this unexpected winner:
"Breaking: Isaiah Washington Falls From (Seattle) Grace."
Congratulations, E! Keep up the top-notch work, and hope you have as much success with mother/manager Dina Lohan's upcoming reality show as you did on today's edition of "Headline Wars."
