In the wake of Reverend Jerry Falwell's death earlier this week, we've been lying awake at night, tossing and turning as we tried to make sense of it all. Thankfully for us, the calm and always prescient Christopher Hitchens puts Falwell's passing into proper perspective, with a thoughtful tribute the Moral Majority leader, neutrally entitled, "Faith-Based Fraud: Jerry Falwell's foul rantings prove you can get away with anything if you have 'Reverend' in front of your name."
And while we don't often admit to seeing eye to eye with Hitch, we acknowledge that—this time—the man may actually be onto something. In fact, his theory even applies to recently castigated radio mainstay, Don Imus. "What a fool Don Imus was," Hitchens says. "If he had paid the paltry few bucks to make himself a certified clergyman, he could be jeering and sneering to the present hour."
Sadly, though Falwell made the most of his clergyman's license, Imus lacked the foresight to follow Hitchens' advice. Fortunately, given his current state of unemployment, we predict Imus will have plenty of time to get the necessary certification. And—as soon as he wins that $40 million lawsuit—he'll also have the means to pay for it.
