Because, you see, Barack Obama is going to be our first African-American president, so really the only journalists that can write about his term in an honest, objective fashion are other African-Americans, right? Sort of like how only Katie Couric and Rachel Maddow were allowed to be mean to Sarah Palin? Something like that.
He and other black journalists say they bring a much-needed perspective to politics. When there was a debate during the campaign over whether Obama, who is biracial, was "black enough" for the African American community, "that was a new conversation for a lot of white people," Douglas says.
He also says Michelle Obama may be viewed through different lenses. "In talking to a bunch of black ladies at a dinner party," Douglas says, there was much buzz about "her impact on obesity in the black community because she's so fit. I'm not sure a nonblack reporter would pursue that avenue."
I guess the issue here is that no publications have any money to hire new reporters for a D.C. beat (isn't everyone going regional?) so if, say, the Washington Post hired several more White House press reporters who happened to be African-American, they would subsequently face bias from the rest of the newsroom that was being trimmed dramatically to put the new employees on the payroll. Either that, or you would have to pay these reporters as freelancers, or significantly less than employees that had been there longer. And um, that just sounds a tad bit racist, don't you think?
But to that end: He's right. There are too few black reporters. And we shouldn't leave a bunch of middle aged white guys in charge of covering America's first black president.

Your perspective would make sense if it weren't for the fact that black professionals are under represented in every field. At a certain point it can't simply be coincidental. The problem existed before Obama's appointment, but it's simply obvious now because of the lacking perspective. The randomness becomes a pretty lame excuse when for something so random it seems to occur everywhere, over and over again. The model industry says "oh we can't find enough black models who meet the requirements", hollywood directors say "oh we can't find enough black actors".
I'm sure their are black journalists that are already hired that could be reassigned to cover this, let's not act as if it requires running out and spending 2.5 mil to hire brand new black journalists.
