Is Gayle King Doing Oprah's James Frey Bidding?

That somebody would select James Frey's new book Bright Shiny Morning as a must-read this summer shouldn't be all that surprising — the reviews have been generally positive. That the somebody would be Gayle King, special friend to Oprah, is. When Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer asked her to recommend some sunshine-y reading material, King plugged two books: Scott McClellan's What Happened, and Frey's Morning, adding that she even liked A Million Little Pieces.

Frey spectators would be right to question King's motives.

It's almost impossible she would recommend the scandal-plagued author without first consulting Oprah; even more likely, King was acting as Oprah's agent, following direct orders to bring some appeasement, now that the Frey storyline – a demarcation in book publishing lore – has reversed itself to a degree, painting Oprah as the villain, and Frey as a complicit bystander.

This was not a casual, throwaway recommendation. Almost certainly, it was a calculated move from Oprah's camp to smooth some stones.

I'm not an Oprah fan but I loved the way she took James Frey and his publisher Nan Talese apart on live TV. Most people in media lack the courage and smarts to hold dishonest guests accountable, but Oprah showed real respect for her audience by looking Frey and Nan Talese straight in the eye and demanding they come clean about everything. I wish more people in media would confront dishonest guests the way Oprah did, but journalistic standars are so low. Oprah's not even a journalist so her brilliant hard-ball questioning was all the more surprising and impressive.

Sorry, but I think you're reaching here. Frey is lucky to publish again, and I highly doubt Oprah ever has to do anything to smooth things out with publishers. Anyone who's helped sell millions of books isn't exactly going to be a pariah.

Oprah is one of the more dishonest people in the media, and she threw James under the bus because she was being bashed by her viewers and NYT. Oprah is as fake as they come.

Actually Oprah is the MOST honest person in media. It took a ton of honesty and courage not to mentional journalistic integrity for Oprah to tell Frey right to his face on live international TV that she felt duped and embarassed and to hold both him and Nan Talese accountable. James Frey was the one who through both Oprah and Nan Talese under the bus (though Nan is still in denial) by insisting that all the details of his book were true when if fact many were wild lies. That's no way to treat your two biggest fans and supporters and if he's too much of a wimp to handle tough questions on Oprah, how does he expect us to believe he had two root canals without pain killers.

I am with Oprah.. Nothing is wrong with recommending his new book. That means that she is giving credit where it is due and she probably feels that he learned his lesson.

You are correct! Finally someone who is not snowballed. Somebody with a brain! There are so few left it seems.
