Life with Louie. Bobby's World. Camp Candy. The Gary Coleman Show. If there is anything the 80s-90s era of cartoons taught us, it's that the trajectory from comedian to animation to game show host/ironic cultural causality is never a pleasant one.
Jeff Foxworthy is trying to beat the system; he's already hosted Fox's game show Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader before signing on for his own animated star vehicle, which will also premiere on Rupert's channel.
But as loathe as you may be to admit that Jeff Foxworthy's brand of redneck comedy is amusing to anyone, this is actually a clever move on both Jeff and Fox's parts:
While the subgenre of blue collar comedy isn't new to cable viewers, the audience for Foxworthy's cartoon won't be the same people that tune in for the more absurd and subversive Adult Swim fare. That doesn't necessarily mean the Foxworthy show will be dumbed down; King of the Hill recently aired season 13 on Fox, god knows how many episodes there are of The Simpsons, and Family Guy originated on the Roger Ailes station.
All this is evidence that Fox actually knows what it's doing when it comes to prime time animation. The comedy on the station traditionally moves towards the working class line-up; Murdoch admits that he didn't have much until he bought the rights to Married with Children. Foxworthy already cemented his status at Fox with the highly successful 5th Grader, and appeals to the channel's demographic of middle-class Americans.
The combination of these two factors — the popularity of blue-collar comedy, and Fox's gift for picking adult-themed cartoons — makes it a pretty safe bet to buy stock in Boone's Farm and settle down with the family bloodhound for next season's breakout 'toon.
Just hope it's better than the Mr. T show.
