Jossiping With Whitney Little
'I hope I don't come off sounding like an idiot. Or like Jessica Simpson. That's my biggest fear.'

When the internet first started, everyone was like, "blogging is a medium for self-absorbed cat lovers." But then internet journos did real things, like exposing potential fraud committed by the DNC's chief of staff. But for this week's Jossiping, we kick it old school, and interview our very own cat lover Whitney Little. The former Jossip intern is now a full-time at Mollygood and an office favorite. We gchatted about New York, cats and getting teased by the gays at Jossip HQ.

Yo, let's start this interview.

Oh goodness! I hope I answer everything correctly.

So, Whitney, tell us about yourself

Well, I grew up in Abilene, Texas, and lived there until I went off to college. I decided that I wanted to move to New York City, so I moved here after I graduated from Texas A&M without a solid job and (almost) without a place to stay … I found an apartment a week before I moved.

Why did you want to come to New York?

I always wanted to do something journalism-related, but there was nothing that excited me outside of NYC. I worked for the city newspaper while I was at A&M and decided I wanted to do something a little different. To me, NYC is an amazing place to be when you're fresh out of college and starting your career. And besides the whole job thing, I just thought it would be a good growing experience for me.

I came to visit New York when I was in high school and hated it my first night. I cried because I wanted to go back to Abilene. I was afraid we were going to die in some sort of explosion or terrorist attack.

But after I got back to Texas I missed New York and had wanted to go back ever since.

Around the office, you have a bit of a reputation. Not as a slut, but as naive. You believed in Santa Claus for a long time. Has New York toughened you up yet?

Oh, I was hoping to be the office slut.

It has and it hasn't. My mom was upset with me because I had lost some of my manners when I went back to Texas for the Holidays. I push past people without saying "excuse me" or "sorry." But I'm definitely still a little naive. I love the little things about the city that everyone else is bothered by. I hope that doesn't change, because it seems like an unhappy existence to always be annoyed.

Yeah, but that's part of our edge. What do you like about the city that annoys everyone else?

I get excited when I see camera crews filming. I think that's so amazing I live in a city where stuff like that is going on. Other people are annoyed because it's in the way. I still love Times Square

Really? How?

It's so bright! Everything is larger than life, there's tons of stuff to do and see. And there's SO much going on, it just makes me smile every time I'm there. It was one of the reasons I fell in love with the city. I know it's full of tourists, but I still feel like one sometimes anyway.

I'm kind of jealous. Not of the liking Times Square part, but of seeing New York with fresh eyes. It's a very beautiful city.

But the people are little gruff. What do you think of actual New Yorkers?

I figured everyone would be rude because that's the stereotype (at least that's what everyone in Texas warned me about). But New Yorkers have always been nice to me. The only people I have a problem with are the boys. I'm used to Texas boys being very helpful and courteous and you just don't get that here. It used to make me angry, but I've learned to control that. Oh, and the subway crazies. They still scare me.

Then, I think, looking back, one day you wake up and you just are tired of the massive amount of … humanity. The thickness of New York. Too many buildings, too many intersections that you have to wait with too many people to cross, too many restaurants, too many things to do, too many choices… the infinity of everything and you think, I'd like….simple choices or… no choices….I'd like things to close and the city to go quiet. And you move to someplace else. : )
