John Koblin’s argument that, thanks to the web breaking EVERY BIT OF NEWS EVER, the newsworthiness of many print media stories are total hoky, since reporters and editors are grasping at whispers of memes to turn out articles rife with speculation and a prayer for relevance.
Which just about describes today’s rumor that Katie Couric might be writing a tell-all memoir.
Keith Kelly reports that “speculation has been swirling” that she’ll be writing a tell-all soon, where she’d pick up a multi-million dollar advance. The rumors have, supposedly, been growing in recent days.
BUT: “Couric hasn’t yet penned a serious non-fiction tome, but she has expressed interest in writing a memoir, said one source close to her. The source, however, insists there are no specific plans right now.”
Not that we are above reporting on the rumors themselves, but if we’re reading this correctly, Kelly is writing about the outside possibility Couric might write a book based on rumors and a source that says there are actually no plans for her to write a book right now?
So what might convince us that Couric is going to write one?
Well “she did write several well-received children’s books for Doubleday a few years ago.” And she “would have a lot of themes to work with - from the turmoil of being in the hot seat at a time of great media upheaval to the wrenching personal story of being a single mom with two young daughters.” And “in this week’s edition of Newsweek, she penned a moving article about how, for the first time, she let her teenage daughters read some of the letters she received after her husband Jay Monahan’s death 10 years ago.” And “another celeb TV newscaster, Barbara Walters, received $5 million from the Knopf imprint of Random House for her memoir, Audition, which is expected to be one of the big books of the spring when it hits May 5. Walters was spotted in the Random House Inc. building earlier this week clutching one of the advance copies of the embargoed book.”
Grasping at straws much?
