GENERAL ALLEGATIONS
JILL ISHKANIAN AT US WEEKLY
13. Beginning on or about March 1, 2002, BAKER was hired
by Us WEEKLY Magazine (“Us WEEKLY”) as their West Coast Bureau
Chief Editor.
14. Between October 2000 and July 1, 2002 JILL ISHKANIAN
was employed as a senior reporter for Star Magazine.
15. Having observed her work product, as well as her
ability to cultivate and maintain important contacts and sources
while working at Star Magazine, BAKER repeatedly asked JILL
ISHKANIAN to quit her job at Star Magazine and come to work for
Us WEEKLY.
16. As a direct and proximate result of BAKER’S
recruitment, JILL ISHKANIAN was hired by Us WEEKLY on or about
July 15, 2002.
17. On or about the spring of 2003 BAKER hired his newborn
child’s nanny (“NANNY”) as a freelance contract reporter for Us
WEEKLY. When JILL ISHKANIAN asked BAKER why he was providing
work to such incompetent novices as opposed to skilled, regular
contributors, BAKER became enraged and yelled at her.
18. On or about June 26, 2003, then Us WEEKLY Editor-in-
Chief BONNIE FULLER (“FULLER”) left Us WEEKLY for a position at
Star Magazine.
19. Believing FULLER would try to recruit JILL ISHKANIAN
to come to work for her at Star Magazine, and believing JILL
ISHKANIAN was a valuable asset for Us WEEKLY, BAKER and MIN
approved a $35,000 per year salary increase (“Raise”) for JILL
ISHKANIAN. JILL ISHKANIAN was not due for a salary review at
the time. BAKER and MIN hoped the Raise would induce JILL
ISHKANIAN to remain at Us Weekly.
20. JILL ISHKANIAN’s employment agreement with Us WEEKLY
was due to expire on July 1, 2004.
21. On or about May 21, 2004 BAKER called JILL ISHKANIAN
on the telephone. During this approximate 20 minute
conversation JILL ISHKANIAN informed BAKER she might leave Us
WEEKLY for another weekly celebrity magazine. This phone call
was witnessed and overheard by a third party.
22. BAKER became enraged by JILL ISHKANIAN’s revelation
that she might leave Us WEEKLY. During that telephone
conversation BAKER threatened JILL ISHKANIAN by stating: “If you
leave I will destroy you! Did you hear me? I will destroy
you!”
23. On or about June 2004, BAKER asked MIN to call JILL
ISHKANIAN to ask her to stay at Us WEEKLY and not leave for
another job at another weekly celebrity Magazine.
24. During a June 2004 conversation between MIN and JILL
ISHKANIAN, MIN promised JILL ISHKANIAN she would be flown to New
York for the purpose of meeting Us WEEKLY executives there, and
that she would have a title change and expanded duties and
responsibilities. She also promised JILL ISHKANIAN that JILL
ISHKANIAN would be able to work directly with celebrity
publicists.
25. Prior to making her decision to stay at Us Weekly,
JILL ISHKANIAN was asked by BAKER to stay home from her job with
Us WEEKLY until such time as her decision to stay or leave was
finalized. JILL ISHKANIAN did, in fact, stay at her home and
not go to work for several days.
26. Prior to making her decision to leave or stay at Us
WEEKLY, BAKER called JILL ISHKANIAN and asked her to return to
work. Thereafter, and in reliance on BAKER’s threats and MIN’s
promises, JILL ISHKANIAN decided to stay at Us Weekly.
27. Plaintiffs are informed and believe and on that basis
allege that during her tenure at Us WEEKLY, JILL ISHKANIAN was
intentionally kept from going to New York to meet the magazine’s
executives. This decision was made by BAKER in an effort to
control JILL ISHKANIAN and to maximize BAKER’s ability to take
credit for JILL ISHKANIAN’s work product.
28. At no time thereafter was JILL ISHKANIAN asked to
travel to New York to meet the Us WEEKLY executives. At no time
thereafter was JILL ISHKANIAN asked to work directly with any
publicists except on very rare occasions.
29. On or about August 2004 JILL ISHKANIAN was promoted
from the position of senior reporter to that of West Coast News
Editor.
30. Plaintiffs are informed and believe and on that basis
allege BAKER became upset by JILL ISHKANIAN’s new title and
during that same week changed his own title from West Coast
Bureau Chief to West Coast Executive Editor and ordered that his
name be moved up the Us WEEKLY Masthead to the very top,
directly under the name of MIN.
