Let the Right One In vs Twilight

Two different teen vampire films are currently awing moviegoers around the United States: Twilight, a cloying American flick based on a novel of the same name, has the teenybopper crowd in a frenzy, while Let the Right One In, Swedish and also based on a book, is a hit in the independent cinemas.

Though the films share several themes, how they work within those themes is altogether different. Here's a rundown of their overlaps and distinctions .

Innocent, Misunderstood, Lonely Humans
Let the Right One In: Oskar, a pale, frail, 12-year-old outcast who exists largely in his own fantasies.
Twilight: Bella Swan, a 17-year-old virgin who moves in with her dad when her mother gets remarried and decides to travel.

Vampire Friends
Let the Right One In: Eli, the mysterious little girl who lives in Oskar's apartment complex. She meets him on the playground at night, but never attends school. She eats human blood but prefers not to do the killing herself.
Twilight: Edward Cullen, the mysterious hottie in Bella's bio class. He looks 17 but is nearing 150. Edward is a "vegetarian" vampire, meaning he feasts on only the blood of animals.

Villains
Let the Right One In: A pack of brutal bullies who constantly harass Oskar, Eli and Eli's feeder, Hakan.
Twilight: A triumvirate of "trackers," human hunters, who set their sights on Bella.

Suggestions of Intimacy
Let the Right One In: In one scene, Oskar and Eli lie in bed together, Eli at Oskar's back. As the brutalized Oskar knows Eli to be a bloodsucking night creature, his trust is touching.
Twilight: Bella is constantly fixated on Edward's beauty, while Edward is constantly fixated on the uniquely delicious scent of Bella's…blood. On prom night (HELLO!), after he saves her life, Bella asks Edward to turn her into a vampire; Edward, a gentleman, refuses.

Shots of Choice
Let the Right One In: Long, still shots of the cold, beautiful and desolate Sweden.
Twilight: Lots of closeups of the beautiful Bella and the beautiful, beautiful evil vampires and the beautiful, beautiful, beautiful good vampires.

Normal Adults
Let the Right One In: Out of touch, rarely seen doing much good.
Twilight: Out of touch, rarely seen doing much good.

Dismemberments
Let the Right One In: 1
Twilight: 1

Beheadings
Let the Right One In: 1
Twilight: 0

Severe Acid Burns
Let the Right One In: 1
Twilight: 0

Moral of the Story
Let the Right One In: Morality is nebulous and ever-changing, so it's best not give any credence to the terms "good" and "evil." Also, if someone hits you, hit back. Hard.
Twilight: Don't have premarital sex.

Let the Right One In is better. It is better by a thousand miles and back. There is no contest.

How could any of you watch the baseball scene and say "This is a good movie."?

Twilight is a very well done movie. Nice photo. Good plot. Good acting. Funny. Romantic. Bella and Edward is nice to look at. A relly good movie experience.

Let the Right One In, on the other hand is the best movie this year, the best horror movie this decade and the best vampire movie ever.

Still I like Twilight.

@Sacramello: oh whatever people who like twilight if you actually READ the book you would see all the important things they left out in the movie and the stuff they added in from the second book to the twilight movie. On top of all of that the movie was LOW budgeted and poorly done.. I would like to believe that with the rave of the fan base for the movie and the book the next movie, New Moon, will be better… but as far as which one is better i have not seen Let the Right One In.. so i have no say on that note.

Twilight is the Lost boys for this generation. It is what it is to it's fans, but it does not compare to Let the Right One in. One is fad, the other is a classic. One is Titanic type tween romance, the other is profound and moving. Even though they are both Vampire movies, they can hardly be compared as they appeal to very different audiences.

Twilight the movie was actually better than Twilight the book because the writing in the book is sub-par at best. And Bella in the book is just annoying, whereas Bella in the movie is BA. Twilight is well acted and actually fairly beautiful. Can't compare it to the Swedish movie, as I haven't seen it, but I liked it. Also, R. Pattz is a fox.

THAT Let the Right One In was honestly one of the worse films I've seen you can disagree with me but I don't watch movies for that reason. I thought Twilight was a great story and it was clean and innocent ! Where did all that go in this nasty world ?
And the Twilight fandom has every right to speak their minds about this series or movie because I have seen it bashed and made fun of because it's not gruesome enough well I think we need more stories like that.

I thought the plot of Let the Right One In is tragic. If you saw it as a love story, you are totally forgetting Hakan. The relationship between Oskar and Eli may lead to the one she already has with Hakan.

Twilight is stupid. Half of the movie had close ups of actors looking constipated.

Anyway, I've seen them both, and I don't know how you can compare the two movies. Ones who like LTROI are going to think Twilight is empty and silly. And the ones obsessed with Twilight are going to be upset that the vampires aren't beautiful and sparkly in LTROI.

And I agree totally with #16 Slayer - I liked the Twilight movie better than the book as well. The prose in the book is unnecessarily wordy and distractingly bad, and Bella is a weak, annoying character. It translated better on screen for me.

True The movie didnt reach its potential when released, but when people read Twilight it captured their hearts. And because of that the movie did the same. And Besides the producer/director of twilight has been fired because people on set on twilight didnt feel like she did the best job that could of been done.

I cant wait till the sequal to Twilight, No Doubts it will be amazing.

@Renee: You haven't even seen LTROI and you're saying Twilight is the bona fide winner? That's a bit narrow-minded, eh? Especially given that people are considering Let the Right One In one of the greatest movies ever made.

No. There is no comparison. One is artistic, beautiful, and has a devastatingly emotional center. The other one is Twilight, a movie I personally liked but was obviously just popcorn fluff. Don't automatically assume Twilight is better just because you've seen it. I'd guess about 99 percent of people who've seen both movies liked LTROI much better. And with good reason.

that's just ridiculous, the movie isn't about not having premarital sex. personally i think you haven't read all the twilight books and you're telling things about twilight that for the most part isn't true. twilight is a story about true love, and what is let the right one win about? blood and some kid that gets beat up. not very original. and edward isn't some hottie, he's the most gorgeous guy and it takes your breath away everytime you see him. i think that before you write any bullshit like this down you should actually read twilight. you could also add in how the craving edward had for her blood is like a herion addicted to their heroin times ten but he is in love with her and she is in love with him and she doesnt care he could kill her at amy second even by accident shes truly in love with him. and if you've read edwards version of twilight he's not always about her blood. he's in love with her and thinks shes too good for him and likewise in bella's view. there are also the beautiful sites of the forests in forks, the beautiful mansion, the cute love scene on the night of prom, now personally BOOOKS are better. read the books and you'll fall in love.

READ THIS TOO: don't WATCH twilight and then READ books. i can gaurantee the book would be better. read both books, movies suck either way.

but personally i don't think these movies should be compared. they're two COMPLETELY different plots. both about vampires, but that's all they have in common.

but twilight the book is hands down better than the movie, in the book it's bella, in the movie, she's an actor, in the book, edward is 8975698357568956 times more BEAUTIFUL than in the movie, for the movie is played by actors. MOVIES ARE NOT THE PEOPLE NOR WILL THEY EVER BE.

and another thing. who cares if a movie might be better than the other? gory things are better to be seen not read like let the right one in. true true love like twilight is meant to be read. and all of stephenie meyer's twilight books are all award winning and a ridiculous amount of copies were sold.

but we all have our own personal opinions and all this will do is make people angry which is pretty pointless. sp personally, i think you should take the comparison off since your idea of twilight is completely idiotic because it's not right.

and one more thing, someone "guessed" 99% of the people liked let the right one in better, you shouldn't even guess that it's just absurd. as you can tell, EVERYONE has heard of twilight, and obviously most people like it because more and more copies keep being sold. i've done some research on let the right one in and read random stuff about it and it seems okay but don't try and completely bash twilight WHEN NONE OF YOU OBVIOUSLY KNOW THE ACTUAL POINT OF TWILIGHT. sure some of us prefer gore and blood but quite frankly i prefer love books.

THANK YOU.

@autumn: More people have heard of Twilight? No shit! That's like saying Britney Spears is better than an underground jam band because Britney Spears has more number ones.

Look, Twilight is a Hollywood production based on a cultural phenomenon. LTROI is a Swedish arthouse flick on a budget of 3 million dollars. Of course more people have heard of it.

And I am not "bashing" Twilight either, as I said before. It was a solid movie and I think I got my money's worth (I caught a matinee). But it is no comparison to Let the Right One In, which has captivated the lucky moviegoers and critics all over the world who have had the privilege of seeing it.

Also, you should not have to read a book to comprehend the film. Lord of the Rings didn't rely on the book; the Godfather didn't rely on it; No Country for Old Men didn't rely on it; I could go on and on. The message of those films was conveyed perfectly. Let the Right One In, like Twilight, is based on a novel, and it left a lot out of the book. Nevertheless, it is a remarkable piece of film making.

Finally, it should be said to those who are assuming too much that Let the Right One In isn't blood and guts. The few instances of blood are essential to the story.

Twilight is bascially Joseph Smith's Dracula. It's sneaky, non-threatening Mormon propaganda. I have nothing against Mormons, but I don't like the way a lot of LDS kind of sneak-force their beliefs on people. If they were just straight forward about it instead of baptizing the dead and doing lawn work and such, I would have a lot more respect for them.

honestly, after trying to read even the first ten pages of Twilight, and trying to watch the film through online means… safe to say…

i really wanted to burn all copies of the Twilight books in a 100mile radius of where i stand.

Twilight was like a FanFic written by a weebo fangirl who decided to change the names to make it her own story!

Let The Right One In proved what a vampire film should be. LTROI was the first vamp film that i deeply liked since the original Dracula! Hell, I've praised the crap out of this swedish gem, and have more then had plenty attempts to dis on the latest fangirl trend that is the abomination of Twilight X(

I've watched both Twilight and LTROI, and I've to admit I hate to compare them. Twilight, to me, is aimed at popular culture, so the majority will say "Twilight is the best" because its so "sweet" and accepted by lots of people (e.g. less vampire violent like blood and more focused on what love is nowadays). I read the Twilight book, and I liked it very much before I knew it was popular; on my own, I discovered the novel had something fresh to the vampire/horror romance genre, but it wasn't super amazing to be the best: there were silly and immature elements that I honestly hated (e.g. love for physical), but there were good things, too, like the falling in love with a "vegan" vampire. But when it came to the big screen, I found myself in the center of the Twilight franchise, and, well, Twilight is an okay story, but I'm not supporting it to be the one that changed the vampire genre. On a personal and emotional level, LTROI was my favorite; it was mature, beautiful, and successful in the atmosphere I'd once felt when I read the Twilight novel. Twilight was "the best", for me, for a little while, but its just so "high school"–pop culture extreme! LTROI really soften the stupidity of vampire genre, and, with child actors and good/evil morality, this film spoke a honest idea for horror romance that made me see a "fresher" side of it.

Sorry, I'm trying to squeeze my thoughts, so don't expect this is all I HAVE to say :(

I have to admit, it is quite hard to compare these films, for all the reasons that have been already stated. I personally did not like Twilight the film, and not because of all the hype or the fact that it catered to the teenset, or anything like that. I found the acting limited, and the special effects poor (although the cinematography was lovely). That is just my opinion. I absolutely loved Let The Right One In, and thought it was masterful acting, storytelling and direction, PERIOD. But what is kinda sad is that I think given the type of people on board in the beginning of Twilight(Kristen Stewart/Catherine Hardwicke both of indie film fame, Robert Pattinson who wanted to do the film because of their career history), that they wanted the feel of the film to be similar to Let the Right One In, but in the end, it just didn't work. That's the feeling I get, they wanted it to be less commercial and more artsy, but what they got was something else entirely…..immensely successful of course but just a different genre of film.

@angel: we've read the book, and in our opinions, we think it is as mediocre as the film.

as for film comparison, I don't know how an "average" film like LTROI could not be better than Twilight. You must have not seen it yet, haven't you? Let the Right One In is done beautifully and everyone about it is simply just delicious art. The Twilight film was almost up there. I loved the indie feel that's been added in Twilight here and there, such as the part when Bella was looking up info on vampires. But the acting was mostly long stares, nearly blank faces (especially between Edward and Bella), and dear Lord the Abercrombie & Fitch sparkle scene…just no. never again. Too hard to take Ed seriously when he says that he's dangerous and all while he is sparkling in pounds and pounds of Sephora cosmetic glitter.

side note: ahh and as for these "Friendly Neighborhood Vampires", hey guess what. Anne Rice did that way before Meyer did, 20-30 years ago. Not much new going on.

Nicky at #43 - well said.

I saw both films and I feel exactly the same way - LTRIO was extraodinary, breathtaking, compelling and directed extremely well; it left me wanting more - and you cannot compare the two films at all. After watching LTRIO , I said to myself, this is what Catherine Harwicke was gunning for but Twilgiht just didnt get there - by any means. LTRIO = artistic and stunning filmmaking. Twilight = wannabe indie but not quick making it; instead, cotton candy.
