Remember the obnoxiously florescent Marie Claire magazine? How it looked like we imagine Mariah Carey's bathroom must? Well, now that Lesley Jane Seymore is out, and Joanna Coles is in, the bright orange stars and neon green exclamation points are falling to the wayside.
“It has always been the smart girls’ book,†Ms. Coles said last week in an interview in her airy perch in the new Hearst building in Midtown Manhattan. “But it drifted off-brand, partly due to the assault on the newsstand from celebrity weeklies. It happened to everyone, not just Marie Claire.â€
The "we were attacked by glossies" comment comes on the heels of their Ashlee Simpson cover, which quoted Jessica's shadow as praising "one's God given attributes" a few weeks before getting her shnoz chopped down. Readers were not pleased with Marie Claire, calling the magazine hypocritical and freaking out that anyone besides FHM would put Ashlee Simpson on a cover.
So, now the new"smart girls' book" gives us indy intelligent Maggie Gyllenhaal, who, like many Marie Claire readers makes more money than her other half. (Or at least we assume she makes more cash, considering she makes about 30 more movies a year.) The most amazing part of this? Coles is managing to give the mag a complete overhaul without axing the entire staff.
Ashlee’s Nose Job Is Last Straw for New Editor of Marie Claire [Katharine Q. Seelye, New York Times]

It is so sad that people have criticized my honey Ash to the point she felt that she needed a nose job. She has gone and changed herself so much… actually, I was content with the way Ashlee looked when I first saw her with jet black hair, without the breast augmentation, and with her cute little jewish nose, wearing her converse shoes unlaced, with her cute little elementary ways.
Because that is what this is really all about: Ashlee wants to look more like an aryan woman, and less jewish. Ashlee should try to understand one thing, that is, you are who you are. Give or take. Ashlee comes from some jewish decent, like me. I would never change myself to look like a white man, not that there is anything wrong with being white, hell, I might even get a nose job as well, but thats about it.
The reason people have treated her unfairly is because of her jewish blood. But she will rise above all that one day, and become a living icon. I guess I can't entirely blame the media for changing Ashlee. After all, it was Ashlee's decision. She wants to be more like Jessica. I have seen the way she looks up to her, in photos, and in general. She really loves Jess, and you know it must be true, because she has modeled herself after her, in some ways, not all. She truly is unique, and has her own defined style. I don't see how people can harass her about trying to be more like Jessica, that is so sweet of her, that she loves her sister that much, people who talk about that are just jealous of their bond. I really do like to see them get along. And I am glad that they have lately. Because really, all they have in there world…is each other, and that is all they will ever need. No man should ever try to come between them. Because he will fail.
They really are two of the most amazing sisters ever.
And…I can't believe that I am writing this like I know them personally or something! I don't even like celebrities! Or gossip! Thats girl stuff! But Ash and Jess are different, they must be, because I love them both, like I have known them for years. And I hate people. Seriously. And if I can love them, that really means that they are two fine human-beings. Love them both, unconditionally. No matter what goes down, I will always be on their side.
