We love us some Joanna Coles. Really, truly do. Smart lady, outgoing, dare we say genuine? But it's no secret the Marie Claire editor is underwhelming Cathie Black & Co. at Hearst, what with her circulation disappointments month after month. Some are blaming the way Joanna revamped the magazine to smarten it up and get rid of the frilly beauty and slave-to-fashion items that were MC's bread and butter under Lesley Jane Seymour.
But us? We're going to place nearly all the blame on MC's lagging on the fact that each of Coles' covers include the creepiest eyes ever to peer out at us from the newsstand. It's not that they're making us see dead people; it's that we're used to seeing Maggie, Sarah, Ashley, and Jennifer as women who wouldn't stick a serrated knife in our spinal column.

As a woman in their demographic, I have to say that the Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ashley Judd covers were total turnoffs … never thought about the eyes, but now that you point them out, they ARE creepy! I thought the Maggie cover was a strong statement right out of the gate, even just because of the choice of Maggie for the cover, but then the next two fizzled. I think she's finally getting it with the Jennifer Connelly cover.
nice try- but it's the inside. I hate this mag and wish I never ordered it.The writing is terrible. This months AlphaWoman stuff is USLESS and the fashion features are a snorefest. This months Jennifer Conolly spread is digusting.
Spluge v. steal is good. As is 101 ways
Maggie's eyes are creepy, yes; Sarah Michelle's kind of Clockwork Orange-y with the lower lash mascara; and Ashley's quite manacing. Jennifer's don't bother me that much, though. I have to agree with LB, it's the inside that's turning me off. I used to love their Women of the World feature, but somehow, nothing seems right about it in recent months. There's something that's bothering me lately but I can't say what. Weird…
Agreed. I've been a MC subscriber for a few years and I despise the new magazine. Joanna Coles is absolutely awful and single handedly ruining what was once a great mag. Way to go Hearst!
