Remember when CNBC's Maria Bartiromo got caught schtooping Todd Thomson, an exec for Citibank, who she regularly covered? Well there's a new story to fill your "TV news lass screwing her way through conflicts of interest" appetite.
Up this round is Telemundo's Mirthala Salinas, who's been sexing Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa — who, surprise of all surprises, she covers regularly! In fact, she was the one who, on June 8, broke the news that he was leaving his wife: "The rumors are true. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa confirmed today that he is separating from his wife, Corina, after more than 20 years of marriage." And indeed, absent from Salinas' report was the fact that she was the one responsible.
The Los Angeles Daily News' Beth Barrett, who broke the story amidst blog chatter, was then joined by the New York Daily News' Michelle Caruso in a holiday edition front-pager. Caruso chimed in again today with news that the mayor isn't the first politico that Salnias has latched on to. (She's also said to have dated California State Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and Sen. Alex Padilla when he was a city councilor.)
LA Weekly had a report late Tuesday with a tale on how the relationship played out on TV (i.e. Salinas' 6pm news would regularly feature Villaraigosa is glowing spots). And as you guessed, LA Observed is a pig in shit.
As for Telemundo? Just like CNBC, they're standing by their girl. At least for now: Readers are being encouraged to write in to NBC Universal brass with their thoughts on the matter.
