MTV Forces Dance Crew Into Chris Brown v. Rihanna Showdown

MAKING MATTERS WORSE — Despite Wrigley's decision to pull Chris Brown from their ad rotation, MTV doesn't feel any such call is necessary. Not only is the Viacom network capitalizing on his alleged beating of Rihanna by running a "news special" called Chris Brown & Rihanna: Love In Trouble, but they also let dance reality show America's Best Dance Crew go ahead with having one of the competing troops perform a routine to Brown's "Forever," the same song used (and commissioned) by Wrigley's. Oh — and they chose a Rihanna song for another crew. It's like they did it … oh, we don't know … on purpose?

A new episode of Dance Crew aired last night. The show is "taped live," which means it doesn't air in real-time, but is recorded a few hours before broadcast. Each week, American Idol-style viewer voting determines who gets voted out from one episode to the next, meaning the music each crew is assigned to dance to is also determined week-to-week.

Brown's alleged assault took place in the early morning of of Feb. 8. Last night's episode, where the Quest crew danced to "Forever" and Fly Khicks danced to "Pon De Replay," was taped yesterday afternoon. A difference of 11 days. Indeed, producers may choose the entire season's line up of songs weeks before the show even goes to air. And Dance Crew's choreographers need time to complete a routine and rehearse it with the contestants. So 11 days might not seem like a lot. But for a network so in tune with young people, and for whom Chris Brown and Rihanna are the epitome of celebrity-dom, you would think a last minute effort to change course might have been demanded.

Instead, producers went ahead with assigning Rihanna's "Pon De Replay" to the Fly Khicks crew and Brown's "Forever" to Quest, leading to an unfortunate on-camera comment from one of Quest's members: "No one doesn't like Chris Brown, huh?" "No one does it like Chris Brown, huh?"

You said the dance crew music is assigned week to week, so how could they have 11 days to swap it out? The dances are so tightly choreographed maybe they really didn't have enough time. Blaming the dance crew is a bit much. Details of the alleged assault were sketchy at the beginning anyway. You also said, "Brown's alleged assault took place. . . ". Brown was not the one assaulted. Or if he was I am sure the pictures of that will be forthcoming. It should be "Brown allegedly committed the assault…".

A group of us should form our own dance crew so we can compete in the upcoming season of this MTV show. That would be totally rad. Jossip could sponsor us and buy our costumes.

Honeslty, the way MTV is handling this entire thing is downright juvenile. It's as if their website is being run by a 14 year old instead of an adult executives with responsible ties.

They've been printing all the latest "gossip" from blogs alleging the reasons why Brown might have beaten, basically sullying the victim's name.
Also, they're treating this story more & more as an 'situation' between two people, using some really irresponsible (likely youthful) user comments as the main sources in their articles on the subject. It's disgusting.

Wow are you serious…. who cares if a dance crew danced to rihanna and another to chris brown. I think people need to grow up. You know he still has fans that want to hear his music. And it is just music. his music didnt beat her ass. funny thing is people are so quick to jump on the band wagon and dont even know the whole story. yeah he put hands on her, her he needs to be punished i am just tired of everyone defecating on his character. she aint so perfect either. no one knows what happen so mind your own business let the music play like rehianna says please dont stop the music. i love both of there music so i am glad mtv is playing it all.

@coffee: I dont think so but I heard there def will be. This image is so damaging and do the public spectacle there is a lot of pressure to handle this by the book. Of course that photo being leaked spread virally over night to tens and tens of thousands of videos like this one and its because of TM zee pandoras box is open. No going back.

Ok.. If it's true that Chris brown beat Rihanna, I won't listen to his music no more. I mean yeah.. he's a good artist but, why would i help make money to a man that beats woman?

OMG if they weren't celebrities this wouldn't be a big deal. I mean get over it equal rights remember I know some women that beat they're men and I myself have been in an abusive relationship. How many people even celebrities have hit they're partners?? A LOT but no one talks about it they keep it quiet and no one knows! For all we know the people talkin about it have done it themselves. Everyone makes mistakes u can't bash Chris for his and I'm sure it wasn't the 1st time so she shoulda left when it started. I'm not bashing her either but if I get hit I'm gone.

I can understand people banning him if he has has another woman in the past or has made it a habit of abusing women before Rhianna, but not if this is the only incident and he receives the proper counseling so that he never does it again. Domestic abuse and beating anybody including a woman is a sereious mental disability that needs ALOT of therapy and counseling. I know this because I was a victim of physical and mental abuse at the handsof my fiance for almost 10 years.
One thing I read about the situation is that Rhianna hit him first, which I can understand him retaliating. Not that he had to defend himself, but having been in "that moment of anger" before, you really do loose it and almost black out in anger. Its almost as if someone else steps in your body and lashes out. Maybe Chris was abused as a child and he had a snap reaction to Rhianna hitting him. I dont know, none of us know, we werent there.Even to this day, when someone puts their hand too close to my face, its almost as if it becomes 3D and I automatically cringe and cower away.
My ex was basically a good man but he was abused as a child and I think that coupled with being an ex marine had alot to do with his anger. He would become abusive with me for no reason, even more so if he had been drinking. Alot of times, our arguments would start when we got home after a dinner out. He would be CONVINCED that if I looked up instead of looking down at the floor as I was making my way to the ladies room or behind him that I was looking at or for other men and that I was "EYE F'ING" them.
When we got home was always when it started after bickering in the car. The next day he would ALWAYS BE REMORSEFUL, crying and saying how truly sorry he was and that it would never happen again. One night it got so bad that he pushed me and I fell and hit my head on a concrete floor and got knocked out. I finally HAD to leave him because I told him that one of these times he was going to kill me, accidentally, and that I didn't want him to spend the rest of his life in prison.
I feel very badly that for both Rhianna and Chris that this incident had to happen in the public eye, and I hope he receives the counseling he needs and that Rhianna is able to heal. Unfortunately, I have about 7 permanent scars on the left side of my face from my ex which I have to look at and hide with makeup every day. I hope she dosent have any scars from this incident because she is physically a beautiful young woman with so much to look forward to in life and Chris is a talented young man.

Actually, the show is taped on Tuesdays and aired on Thursdays. Crews get their songs for the following week right after the taping on Tuesdays. The crews don't get to choose their music at all. The only people that can be blamed here are the producers (Randy Jackson) and MTV/Viacom.

Ok to get this settled it doesn't matter what they danced to and no ones to blame because nothing happend. It wasn't like they competed against each other quest danced earlier in the show and fly kicks competed later on the battle to stay with the step crew ( don't know they're name) they danced way after quest and not in competition to them. Kanye west and 50 have a fued going so should ones music be played on VH1 and the other MTV come one get over it. MTV is not trying to start a fued with anyone music is music.

I think MTV did it just to get more ratings. And also i think chris brown career should be damaged because he is supposed to be a positive image for teens. Think about it, most of his fans are teenage girls. How is battering a woman a positive image for girls to see while they are listening to their music.
