We're hearing the layoffs inside Viacom's MTV have begun, according to a tipster, "mostly the music side of the business." Which makes sense, since MTV no longer has use for anything on the music side. This coincides with earlier rumors about MTV initiating layoffs in two stages: one in early December (that would be now), and another in January.
Were you just let go? Or was your entire department axed but you? We want to hear from ya.

If only Viacom would shut down MTV…oh well, one can dream.
VIACOM and MTV Networks do not care about it's employees. They fire good hard working people from VJ's to their Chief of Security without compunction or thought of consequences.
Bad News
If MTV would stop broadcasting crappy, stupid shows that insult the intelligence of fleas, it might perhaps make more money or get better ratings. There is no reason whatsoever to cut good, hard-working people when you simultaneously broadcasting stupid, crappy shows. It's the same with the Murdochs: You don't have huge, expensive birthday parties when you're cutting quality, hard-working journalists. What type of disease has infected media owners these days? They all appear to be suffering from Infectious Stupidity lately. Note to MTV: Stop broadcasting stupid, crappy, intelligence-insulting shows that no one cares about. Start getting back into the MUSIC business. You may even want to broadcast–gasp!–actual music videos.
i have been through it at mtv - its worth it in the end. be happy if you get cut!
MTV also owns VH1, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central (to name a few), so it ain't just "The Hills" being affected. Self-righteous assholes. There are families involved in hundreds of layoffs.
"quality, hard-working journalists"
At MTV? HaHa. Surely you jest… or are retarded.
I'm at MTV right now - we've been waiting for the axe to drop for months now. Good people will invariably be cut along with some of the necessary dead weight they need let go. Bad situation all around - hopefully the new changes foster the environment of risk-taking creativity that defined the channel "back in the day."
This is for Curt, who said "quality, hard-working journalists At MTV? HaHa. Surely you jest… or are retarded."
MTV does have quality, hard-working journalists.
MTV News consistently provides award winning coverage and most recently did groundbreaking work with the Choose or Lose Street Team covering the election.
Their coverage of Virginia Tech and other sensitive subjects is in depth and respectful. MTV News may also cover pop culture but keep in mind why they exist.
The minimal air time that they do get is enhanced by great reporting on mtv.com and online extended video segments. MTV News is for young people so if you weren't aware of what they do, you probably aren't their demo.
The youth vote is getting a lot more attention and the dialogs that MTV News provided between candidates and young people played a big part in youth voter participation. Look at what they did with MySpace - providing real time interaction and debate with candidates, before YouTube and other entities copied their model.
CNN even recently collaborated with MTV News and aired several of their news packages. They recognize what kind of work MTV News is doing.
Perhaps before you suggest someone may be "retarded" you should do a little research.
Wow MTV should get a medal, the youth vote increased by a whopping 2 percent.
MTV news could be the best in the world and it would'nt matter because 95 percent of the programming is about rich bich 16 year olds crying about getting the wrong color BMW for their 16th birthday.
MTV is about as intelligent as a bag of hammers.
MTV ended its heyday somewhere around 1991 and 1992. What remains is a rotting carcass that should have been buried long time ago.
The problem is that it's leaders and executives are promoting all these reality shows to the point that our real-life problems are more important than the BMW crybabies.
I say leave the "little guys" alone and go after all the execs and vps — they are the ones that have created and sustain the atrocity that is known as MTV.
Pulling the scales off a dead fish won't change a thing — it's still a dead fish.
wow a layoff is a layoff no matter what company you work for. have a heart and realize we're in the holiday season and thousands of people (including the families) are being affected.
mtv has often had sketchy hiring/firing practices. They refer to those employees as permalancers, keep them on for a few years then turnover.
MTV really doesn't know what they hell they are doing. They have major acts like the Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift that can help them generate a large audience again, but they fail to see that opportunity. They killed it a few years ago with major long commercials and 30 second video clips during a tv show thats supposed to broadcast the top 10 videos of the day. They lost trust in viewers. I never turn that channel on anymore. For a network who doesn't have to pay for content (music videos are promotion for artists) they really aren't smart about their moves.
i'm seeing all of this talk of "dropping the axe" and cutting the "dead weight", but i'm pretty sure the only dead weight that needs to be "axed" is the large pile of shit this channel considers "programming". the hills? from g's to gents? i stumbled across a commercial the other day for a new show called "bromance"(which from the looks of it, is about a bunch of failed hollister models who are questionably homosexual). is this channel fucking serious? what happened to the M in the name MTV? i think they should rename themselves to IIA(Insulting the Intelligance of America) and then they can play bullshit shows until they're blue in the face.
