What's worse than a flip-flopper? Trying to have it both ways! Thus, conservative group Let Freedom Ring's catchy nickname for Barack Obama: "Both Ways Barack." Their 30-second spot, which isn't terribly creative but certainly drives home its point, would otherwise be forgettable were it not for the singular historical blip it scored: being the first political ad MTV aired since reversing its long-standing policy and agreeing to take dollars from the nation's dirtiest industry.
Except: Didn't MTV say they would only take ads from candidates or their parties, and not the "unaffiliated" 527 groups who so eagerly spread salacious messages about candidates? You know, like the one seen here?
Yes, they did. Originally.
As TV Week reported in June: "The channel, part of Viacom’s MTV Networks unit, says it will now take political ads, though only from political candidates and party political committees—not the third parties that often lob the biggest bombs."
But according to MTV's own report, they insisted it would be case-by-case for 527s and other third-party groups:
After announcing its decision to begin airing political ads this year, MTV said it would accept spots from the candidates and party committees, but would consider ads from unaffiliated, so-called "527" groups and political action committees on a case-by-case basis. Hanna stressed that his organization is not a 527 group; 527s are not regulated by the Federal Election Commission and are not subject to the same contribution limits as political action committees.
And with this spot from Let Freedom Ring, it's clear they're quite fine with interested parties using the network to further their attack agendas. Welcome to profit motivations, MTV. We've been waiting for you.

I don't care who put out the ad - it's the truth and that's what matters…..at least to those of us that haven't drank the Kool-Aid….
Go MTV for showing its viewers political ads and not shielding them from it!!!! I'm glad the truth it getting out there.
I don't care either if it's true,as long as the person making the claim isn't GUILTY of the same.
