As the clock begins ticking toward 1pm EST when NBC's Jeff Zucker is expected to make a formal annoucement, reports following yesterday's rumors about job cuts at the media giant have started bleeding through like Culture + Travel staffers. The Wall Street Journal seems to be on top of the story, confirming yesterday's murmurs of, at least, MSNBC's evaporation (while the LAT says 1 percent, or 600 to 800 jobs, will be slashed). Via Bloomberg News:
NBC Universal Television Chief Executive Officer Jeff Zucker has called a meeting with employees in New York as part of an effort to explain his plans, said two people familiar with his plans. Neither of them would discuss the size of any planned layoffs. Operations for the cable-news channel MSNBC in Secaucus, New Jersey will be closed down and moved to Rockefeller Center in Manhattan and another facility in New Jersey, the Journal said.
All this is certain to make a wonderfully funny Saturday Night Live skit. And, during the second leg of Studio 60's season this spring, the show's writers won't be able to keep themselves from injecting a little Jeff Zucker douchebaggery into Amanda Peet's character.
