Neil Feldman's Battle with AOL's Tech Service Team

I, along with approximately 2,999 occupants of New York City, receive Neil Feldman's Not Only Brooklyn Arts & Events newsletter. I get it in my Inbox twice a week because I met the guy through a former employer of mine who owned a DIY arts venue in Brooklyn. Neil's the kind of guy that comes out to every show, writes it up, and then sends it in an ancient AOL-style email that makes you remember back when all your parents and friends used America Online for all their long-form writing needs.

Even though Feldman's homegrown project is a little on the analogous side, you have to respect the guy for being so dedicated to the local art scene. So why did AOL shut down Feldman's blog?

Feldman believes it was a computer glitch, but one that has yet to be rectified by the company, despite repeated calls from both him, as well as Brooklyn Burrough President Marty Markowitz.

According to Feldman, thousands of people are being inconvenienced and Brooklyn cultural institutions are experiencing reduced patronage as long as the cancellation of NOB persists.

"The whole situation is preposterous; it should take no more than five minutes for an AOL executive with authority to resolve. And isn't it ironic that AOL algorithms, not humans, shut down a much appreciated public service that the company should be proud chooses to use it?" Feldman wrote in an email.

Now it might seem like some delusions of grandeur that Feldman would think AOL is going to drop everything to fix his blog problem. But aren't blogs sort of the bread and butter of AOL these days? If homegrown institutions like Feldman's aren't given attention on the hosting service, he might as well take his business and bandwidth money elsewhere.

Thanks for doing the story. But why not mention that you found it on Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn (www.otbkb.com)
