New York Times Sports Supplement Folds
Play time is over

Sad, hungover, Tuesdays. When you have to pick the crust out of your eyes, hock out a lung, and wonder why in god's name you are so hungover after Monday Night Football.

And then you remember: you spent all night holding an effigy for the demise of your beloved sports quarterly, Play. A New York Times supplement, Play magazine was shuttered due to falling ad sales (hey guess who buys pages in sports papers? Automakers! Guess who doesn't have any money right now? Automakers!) and sinking NYT stock prices.

Sad day, because Play was breaking even on sales, and sold the largest portion of ad space in New York Times history when Nielsen bought out the entire Olympic issue.

Of course, that was a little bit before the banks started failing and everything else in the economy fell with it, even the venerable sports sections.

If anything, this shows us exactly where the Times places their interest in sports news, after recently condensing the Sport and Metro sections earlier this year. Got to make room for more Sunday Style!

Update: Conflicting reports now say that Play was losing money faster than the G.O.P. when Sarah Palin got her hands on a Neiman Marcus catalog.
