News Political Hottie Ben Smith Dumps One Mogul-Backed Blog for Another

bensmith0103.jpg

Daily News political jock Ben Smith yesterday announced he was splitting Mort Zuckerman's camp to take a gig at The Politico, that new web-based journalism outfit Kit Seelye has been dying to tell you about. The site – launching Jan. 27 – made headlines when it snagged WaPo vets John Harris and Jim VandeHei. And we only started paying a modicum of attention when Slate's Jack Shafer started blasting Politico's parent, Allbritton Communications, for "reek[ing] of oversell."

For Ben, however, it seems like the right move: His blogging career for the News' The Daily Politics was showing just a touch more promise as, well, The Empire Zone. The only way to move up from blogging, after all, is jumping to Page Six, Vanity Fair, or … another outfit that thinks they totally get the web.
