One of Two Paths for American Idol Survivors

blakelewis.jpg

If you are among the last contestants to survive American Idol, one of two things will happen to you after the show wraps: You will make the morning show press rounds, announce a record deal with a major label, put out an album, win the Grammy for Best New Artist, and go on to a lifetime of fame and money; or you will make the morning show press rounds, announce a record deal with a major label, put out an album, watch sales stall at 200, and get dropped from your label. Guess which category Blake Lewis – who lost to Jordin Sparks – falls into?

The latter. But you knew that.

Lewis revealed in an interview that his label, Arista, dropped him after just one record, Audio Day Dream, which moved just 300,000 copies since its Christmas 2007 release. There was also no hit single, a major black eye for an Idol alum.

But Lewis is in good company. Or company, at least. Not only did fellow runner up Katharine McPhee get dropped by Arista, but so too did Idol winners Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard.

I know Blake, he's good friends with a buddy of mine. He's an honestly great guy and a talented musician.

From what I've heard, I don't think that getting dropped was such a bad thing for him. Look at it this way, the alternative is being stuck in an AI related contract…

I'm not going to say he's ever going to be pop star famous, but now he gets to be his own musician on his own terms.

But he got to be a musician on his own terms by NOT going on Idol. He was willing to risk it for the exposure and now he's taking the recognition that remains and hoping to cash in. No prob…just don't make it sound like you nevah wanted it in the first place. Admit it didn't work and find something that does.

By the way, he's fug…not that it matters.:-)
