One-Tenth of the Real Mariah Carey is Featured on This Month's Elle

Madonna on Out. Jennifer Aniston on Redbook. Kelly Clarkson on Elle. All of these are shining examples of magazines Photoshopping their cover subjects to within a inch of reality. Pop superstars replaced with alien lifeforms. Body parts swapped in and out. Arm, torso, and ass fat replaced with white space.

Now, Elle is adding Mariah Carey to the esteemed list of cartoons.

That her body is a slimmer version of Mariah than we've ever seen might be one tip off that something is amiss. Or maybe it's the fact that the photo editor had far too much fun with this cover, insinuating that the arms of whomever's body she does appear on is physically holding up Mariah's off-balance head on the neck of a stranger.

Faking is why the Vogue cover with Gwyneth failed so miserably. It scares people in ways they're not even conscious of– a far more important variable in cover design than the cover person's current celebrity status, or whether her arms are above her head or not, or whether her head fills 42% or 44% of the frame….

Whoever does these covers must think all readers have sh*t for brains.
