Peter Castro Drops the Tilde

peoplemag.jpg Out goes Rina Stone, in comes Peter Castro. (Sure, they held/hold different positions, but we've gotta make this sound dramatic.) The 18-year tabloid veteran returns to People after 15 months running People En Español, where he had to care more about the Latin Grammys than the regular Grammys. Which, let's face it, must've been tough. There, "his sense of fun, buzz and news were on ample display." Fun. And also: assistant managing editors Jess Cagle and Betsy Gleick are now exec editors. Sounds like it's getting heavy on top.

Larry Hackett's meeeemo, next.

It gives me enormous pleasure to announce that Peter Castro is returning to
PEOPLE as deputy managing editor.

Peter rejoins us after having spent the last 15 months as the managing
editor at People En Espanol, where his sense of fun, buzz and news were on
ample display. Prior to that dazzling stint, Peter spent 18 years at PEOPLE,
most recently serving as executive editor overseeing entertainment coverage.
He is a dogged competitor, an inventive and enthusiastic editor, an
indefatigable raconteur and the best-dressed former chatter writer ever. I
was sorry to see him leave last summer, and I am truly thrilled he's coming
back to do battle once again.

Peter begins on Dec. 3.

I am also very happy to announce that Assistant Managing Editors Betsy
Gleick and Jess Cagle have been named Executive Editors.

Betsy, an AME overseeing news and human interest since 2002, first joined
the magazine in 1992 as a senior writer before a six-year stint at TIME and
two years at On magazine.

Jess, who began his journalism career here at PEOPLE in 1987, spent 10 years
at Entertainment Weekly and two years as TIME's man in Hollywood before
returning to PEOPLE in 2002. He was named an AME in 2006.

Please join me in congratulating Peter, Betsy and Jess.
