Product Placement
advertisement, editorial or advertorial?

Ideally in the magazine world, the line between advertising and editorial content is clear. But sometimes, it gets blurry. At such times we are shocked (shocked!), and must share our indignation with you in something we call Product Placement by Intern Anastasia.

What’s that, you haven’t heard of Gotham or L.A. Confidential? Do you fly commercial airlines and clean your own house? Ew. Gotham and L.A. Confidential are two of the lux titles owned by Jason Binn’s Niche Media. Let’s see how much advertiser ass-kissing they have to do to turn a profit, since no one’s paying money to read these things.

gotham2.jpgGotham:
Number of Editorial Pages: 107
Number of Advertising Pages: 144
Number of Individual Advertisers: 111
Number of Those Advertisers Mentioned in Editorial Pages: 44
Least Plausible Product Endorsement:. The Vertu cell phone, which costs $6,300. Sure, it fits their editorial mission, we just find it implausible that a six thousand dollar cell phone exists.
Most Shameless Advertorial: “Give as Good as You Get,” featuring gift ideas supposedly inspired by “New York’s most beloved personalities,” including pothead socialite Arden Wohl, junior-league douchebag Donald Trump Jr., senile gossip columnist Cindy Adams, and Liv Tyler’s son Milo Langdon. We had to Google little Milo to find out who he was, which just shows we shouldn’t be reading Gotham to begin with.

L.A. Confidential:
Number of Editorial Pages: 126
Number of Advertising Pages: 191
Number of Individual Advertisers: 149
Number of Those Advertisers Mentioned in Editorial Pages: 52
Least Plausible Product Endorsement: A $60 Bebe handbag. Duh, Bebe is for the Vanessas of the world, not the Blair Waldorfs.
Most Shameless Advertorial: “A Man For All Seasons,” on Grove owner Rick Caruso, in which the author enthuses that “the City of Los Angeles should be grateful to him,” and “the Caruso family lights up my life.” Also, he cured polio, and every time he farts it actually reverses global warming a little.
