Jay McCarroll: Crazy Homeless Guy?
Or Crazy Like A Fox?

Earlier this morning, we flipped through the latest issue of New York magazine and paused, with fleeting interest, at a wordy “Where are they now?” type profile on fashion has-been/never-was Jay McCarroll, and his marginally more successful Project Runway compatriots. In the piece, Jay, the overweight, tinny-voiced season-one winner, claims to be homeless, unemployed and sleeping in his studio, which is to say he turned out pretty much exactly as we would have expected.

But wait!

An angry tipster (who also appears to be suspiciously like Jay’s best friend-slash-Number One fan-slash-publicist) suggests that we’ve all been the victim of a bizarre and rather unfunny prank perpetrated by one semi-employed Jay McCarroll.

“New York Magazine is retarded and will believe/print anything. You people are too mean to Jay.” So begins our tipster’s syntactically awkward missive, which quickly transitions into a syntactically awkward press release singing the praises of (you guessed it!) Jay McCarroll:

Mischievous fashion designer and Project Runway first season winner Jay McCarroll stunned friends, family and co-workers today with the arrival of the new issue of New York Magazine. Apparently, the ever-joking McCarroll told the New York writer that he was homeless and she not only believed it, but wrote about it in the issue of New York that hit newsstands today. As evidenced in videos he and his team have been making and posting to Youtube, this is all some inside joke.

McCarroll, who is not homeless (he lives in a beautiful building on the Upper West Side), has recently been tapped to head up the re-launch of classic 80’s sportswear brand Camp Beverly Hills and also has his own line and show premiering on QVC this fall.

Oddly enough, not only does our tipster have the inside scoop on Jay’s yarn gone awry, but he also seems to know an awful lot about Jay’s career prospects, not to mention Jay’s home address. Plus, when you click on the YouTube link—again, thoughtfully provided by our well-informed tipster friend—it appears he also has a vested interest in Jay’s vast collection of amateur video hijinks, seeing as he’s personally uploaded somewhere between 10 and 20 of Jay’s home movies. (It’s almost as though he and Jay actually know one another!)

Meanwhile, after carefully considering this whole Jay McCarroll “Homeless, Or Hilarious?” puzzle, we’ve decided it comes down to one of the following:

(a) Jay McCarroll is homeless, bitter and living in his studio, or (b) Jay McCarroll tricked New York magazine for no reason other than to promote a YouTube video of himself prancing around with a sign that reads “WILL DESIGN FOR FOOD” before jumping into a 2002 Mercedes Benz CLK.

Either way, we’ll never be caught dead in his fugly, carnival-chic clothes.
