Mike Huckabee’s pugilistic campaign chairman, Ed Rollins, appeared to stop just short of threatening Mr. Romney with physical violence at one point.
“What I have to do is make sure that my anger with a guy like Romney, whose teeth I want to knock out, doesn’t get in the way of my thought process,†Mr. Rollins said. …
But the New Hampshire debate was striking in that it amounted to a gang tackle of Mr. Romney, even though Mr. McCain was leading in polls in the state.
“The glee the other candidates go after Romney with is really unique,†said Dan Schnur, a Republican strategist who worked on Mr. McCain’s presidential campaign bid in 2000 but is not affiliated with any campaign now.

A few facts make this easy to understand.
Mike Huckabee is a Baptist minister. Hates Mormons. Period. Played upon this enmity to win in Iowa - but won't take him so far elsewhere. A man who can't think ahead far enough to finance his own campaign wants to be President. Scary.
John McCain thinks the nation owes him the Presidency (like Hillary). He thought he'd scare everyone off by running for 4 years. He, too, ran out of money. He ran out of ideas a long time ago (he also ran out on his first wife). He can get "independents" - i.e., people who don't care enough to pick sides - to vote for him but not Democrats - for whom he's not liberal enough - or Republicans - who consider him a liberal.
This is not rocket science.
