Television Critic For The Newsday Evaluates Katie Couric's Performance After The One-Year Mark

Couric has been sampled by the traditional "old news" crowd, and largely rejected. So what went wrong?

Inaugural years for any major-league anchor are customarily rough. Tom Brokaw was tagged a lightweight by the press, Dan Rather was ridiculed and Peter Jennings was hounded out of the chair after he first started in the early '60s (the onetime ABC "anchorboy" would return two decades later.) Don't even ask about Barbara Walters or Connie Chung.

The dilemma, paradox and insurmountable obstacle for any newcomer is this: They're not Walter Cronkite or David Brinkley.

    No. 1 MediaPerson says:

Even Walter Cronkite was dubbed "Walter Can't-Write" by his coworkers, and NBC colleagues would regularly dunk David Brinkley's cravat into their inkwells. And what about Barbara Walters and Connie Chung?
