One in four adults say they read no books at all in the past year, according to a poll released Tuesday. Of those who did read, women and seniors four books in the last year — half read more and half read fewer. Excluding those who hadn't read any, the usual number read was seven.
Those alarmed by the results of the study would do well to remember that a quantifiable measure of books read does not necessarily bear any correlation with intelligence, as evidenced by President Bush's boastful declaration that he himself read more than 60 books in just the first seven and a half months of last year.
