Remembering Russert

russertbook1.jpg

As the media industry immediately begins to mourn the loss of one of journalism's pros, and with Father's Day right around the corner, our minds immediately jumped to Tim Russert's Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons, the NBC D.C. bureau chief's 2005 book composed of letters written by readers about their own fathers, which came flooding in after his 2004 book Big Russ and Me, about growing up with his father. Russert has a son of his own (with Maureen Orth), Luke, who just graduated from Boston College and hosts the XM Radio sports show 60/20 with James Carville.

Below, Brian Williams reports the news.

I am still in shock. This man was so great at what he did. I am sitting here watching MSNBC feeling as though I have lost a member of my own family. No one like him he will be missed.

Whoa. Tim Russert was no saint. When he got to the NBC Washington Bureau, he was instrumental in the termination of two great reporters, both women: Ann Garrells, now of NPR, and Candy Crowley, now of CNN. He found neither pretty enough. No joke. Once, when asked what the qualifications were for hiring in the NBC bureau, Russert said "Beauty." Andrea Mitchell was made to feel very nervous, but her relationship with Alan Greenspan gave her sufficient "air cover" to keep her at NBC. It was not one of his finest moments. Pardon me for bringing this up now since all the reports are so overwhelmingly glowing. But the man, again, was no saint.

It's as if you're saying that because he had faults and wasn't perfect and did certain bad things, this somehow negates all the praise he's receiving. I'd like to stand up at the funeral of your loved one and point out his/her faults and all the bad things he/she did. It's been less than 24 hours! I don't care if what you're saying is true - bring it up later!

    Donna,
in very bad taste. Someone of his caliber should be applauded for the ability to bring news to those of us that are not as savy as most. Man of the people.

Dona, you are correct to point these things out now because no one cared before and no one will care later. This is the only time anyone is going to listen to anything about Tim Russert. His pronouncements about the primary being over after the North Carolina vote basically amount to voter suppression. The idiots at MSNBCOBAMA don't seem to realize that their job is to report the news, not make the news.
