Rodale Might Be For Sale, Shhh

Rodale totally wants you to snap them up! Like, really bad. Or, at the very least, they want your deep pockets to come on board and drop a load of cash all over a messy copy of Men's Health. Except you're going to have to submit yourself for a full cavity search — Rodale has some strict conditions when it comes to getting in bed.

Rumor has it JP Morgan is showing prospective suitors a "black book" on the company, with detailed financials and, we're hoping, a weight loss recipe from Prevention that doesn't include chicken or tuna.

Rodale, for what it's worth, remains steadfast that it is not for sale. And for once, there's actually evidence that their public rebuff might be grounded in truth. Or a modicum of truth. Says Nat Ives:

And indeed several suitors have approached Rodale, the publisher of magazines such as Men's Health and Prevention, about buying the company this year — only to be rebuffed by President-CEO Steven Pleshette Murphy, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

But the company is actively looking for help reaching its next phase of development. Observers said it would be unusual to circulate a memorandum if selling an equity stake, or more, wasn't at least an option. "They've got all these relationships with banks and private equity, so if all they want is to get $100 million, it is odd that they went to the trouble of putting out a book," an observer said.

Odd? Certainly even the execs at Rodale know The Abs Diet isn't going to remain a best-seller forever.
