Russell Brand Ruins Lives, Is a Total Life Ruiner
Officially not a cool guy

Russell Brand, that saucy British bloke who had a minor part in the Apatow-produced Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and who somewhat inexplicably ended up hosting the MTV VMAs this year, certainly has a penchant of sticking his nose into trouble.

The sexy/hideous (point is still up for contention) Brand is most famous for his comedian/rock star shtick, and has written a book about his drug addiction and struggle with recovery. But even after several years of solid sobriety, the guy just can't seem to get himself together. First he pissed of Jonas Brother fans everywhere by making fun of the trio's virginity and their promise rings at the VMAs, and now he's in it deep in his own country after a prank phone call during a radio broadcast went terribly wrong.

During a BBC Radio 2 broadcast, The Russell Brand Show, the actor/comedian and fellow celebrity Jonathan Ross prank called famed British thespian Andrew Sachs and told him that Russell was sleeping with his granddaughter, 23-year old Georgina Baillie. Well, how 'baller of them. And of course, Sachs complained, as did over 27,000 listeners, resulting in Ross' 6-month ban from the radio station, and at least one BBC Radio 2 exec resigning because of the controversy.

"In a letter to BBC director-general Mark Thompson, (station controler Lesley)Douglas said: "It is a matter of the greatest possible sadness to me that a program on my network has been the cause of such a controversy." She went on to apologize to Sachs, his family and the audience.

And while this is sad news, it is sort of funny to imagine this incident if it had happened in America. Who would Brand and Ross have called? Billy Ray Cyrus? John McCain? Bruce Willis? Scratch that last one, Willis would definitely have high-fived Rumer and been like, "Good job, bro."

Brand doesn't need the BBC anyway; he won me over forever with this: http://tinyurl.com/52qjsl

The complaints and subsequent hullabalo were created by the UK tabloid newspapers that whipped the uneducated curtain-twitching, sock-knitting self-righteous masses into a frenzy.
He still has his core audience (of over 4 million for his radio show alone) that will follow him everywhere and anywhere. It's just a matter of time until he's doing radio again, hopefully on an independent network that doesn't have to cowtow to the radio ratepayers that fund the BBC.
Go Team Russell!

27,000 out of 60 odd million, talk about minority programming - If only they listerned this much when we tried to get some decent programmes on the BBC.

You seem to be a bit misinformed about this. It was not a prank call but an arranged interview with Sachs. When Sachs didn't answer the phone, Brand instead left an answerphone message. Jonathan Ross blurted out that Brand had slept with Sachs granddaughter (topless model and dancer in 'The Satanic Sluts' dance troupe). Two people complained after the show, which when gutter rag the Daily Mail got hold of the story escalated to 27,000! Both have apologised to Sachs and he has accepted, yet still it is not the end of it. It's ridiculous!
