Sci-Fi Channel Renames Itself After an STD

You may have noticed that in an ongoing attempt to make their network palatable to non-geeks and nerds, the Sci-Fi Channel is now marketing themselves as "SyFy." Hip, right? Except "Syfy" is also a Polish slang term for Syphilis, which is why you should never name your station or get a tattoo in a language you don't speak fluently.

Its a fitting name for a network who's programming is about a good as an std (except Galactica).

It???s funny how one of the reasons behind the rebranding is to have an uniformly capitalised name, and yet everyone seems to write ???SyFy??? instead of ???Syfy??? (as they call themselves).

Also, we here in Poland use ???syfy??? not only as a slang term for syphilis, but also a very common term for (a) acne ??? as in ???imagine how cute he???d look if not for all the syfy on his face??? ??? and (b) stinking, ugly, dirty mess ??? as ???I love hanging out with him, but his flat is a total syf???.

You can only imagine how hilarious their press release is: ???Syfy also creates an umbrella brand name that can extend into new adjacent businesses under the Syfy Ventures banner, such as Syfy Games, Syfy Films and Syfy Kids.???
