Showtime's Dexter Campaign Worked a Little Too Well

As gruesome counterpoint to Law and Order, where the stories are ripped from the headlines, a Canadian man was arrested trying to plagiarize a a page out of Michael C. Hall's book when he allegedly lured a man into his garage and killed him in a style similar to Showtime's anti-hero serial killer, Dexter.

The story came out around Halloween and it was weird enough to warrant a post, but there was all that election fervor and it got lost in the wayside. So here's the deal: Canadian "filmmaker" Peter Twitchell convinced Johnny Altinger that he was meeting a woman he met on an Internet dating site. But Twitchell was actually making his own movie, that was a sequel to the Star Wars franchise, included a member of the original cast, and apparently necessitated a snuff scene.

Ripped from the headlines, people:

Over the last few months, he had been finishing a tribute movie to Star Wars filmed last year.
Star Wars: Secrets of the Rebellion featured an international cast, including the actor who played Boba Fett in the original George Lucas films. People who worked on the film said Twitchell poured a lot of his own money into the project. He even purchased a new digital video camera.

So…Star Wars film? So how does Dexter play into this again?

Altinger's body hasn't been discovered, but cops arrested Twitchell after finding a script, in which a male killer lures a cheating husband through an Internet dating scam and decapitates him with a power saw, according to the Vancouver Sun.

The killer in Twitchell's script works for the police, as does Dexter (Michael C. Hall), a Miami blood splatter analyst who moonlights as a serial killer.

Rosenberg said that a "Dexter" copycat is something the show's producers have feared since the show premiered in 2006 - and that there's never been any intent to glorify Dexter's murders.

Worst. Star Wars/Dexter slash fanfic ever. But seriously, that is horrible and crazy and did anyone ever try to copycat Brett Easton Ellis' American Psycho's Patrick Bateman? Because that one seems like a gimmie.

what?? dexter is an awesome show!! what a dumbass guy to try it in real life. it's obviously (to those of us with reasoning brains) not meant to simulate a real-life situation, it's a fun show with great characters…

What do you mean :who else would want to watch that show??" yea cuz Showtime set out to track down serial killers by making this show and finding out what households are tuning in. Does that mean that everyone that watched the Sopranos is secretly in the mob? Get real, dumbass. It's GREAT TV! Nothing worse than CSI shows anyway!
