If this New York magazine cover is any indication, Gossip Girl is the second coming of Jesus. Jessica Pressler & Chris Rovzar make the case that this show, despite the lackluster ratings, is a game changer. They even give their reasons in listicle format!
We're going to do one better: We're gonna refute each bullet point. In listicle format!
1) Because ‘Gossip Girl’ is the Greatest Teen Drama of All Time.
They said that about 90210 and, for its time, it was. Then they said that about The O.C., and we stopped believing these proclimations.
2) Reason No. 2 Because offscreen, the drama continues.
Wait, you mean those made up, publicist-planted feuds between co-stars? And that rumor mongering about Chace Crawford being a 'mo?
3) Because ‘Gossip Girl’ is changing the very model of a successful TV show.
Um, not really. The model goes like this: Best friends sleep with each other, feud with each other, party with each other, sleep with each other.
4) Because of Blake and Leighton.
Sure, we love these girls, but their characters do the following EVERY SINGLE EPISODE: Reunite, get angry with each other, spar separately, reunite.
5) Because there may really be a Gossip Girl.
Publicists are planting items about a show with a plotline about gossipmongering? CRAZY!
6) Because, against all odds, it offers profound social commentary.
True! Young, attractive, rich people like to party and have sex.
But certainly don't interpert any of this to mean we're not eagerly awaiting the return of Gossip Girl.
